i have an '83 250r. well heres my problem, last weekend i went riding, playing in dirt and water and then all the sudden it started sputtering like i fouled a plug. i had an extra one on me so i changed it, and it ran fine again. so the next day i went riding again. same thing happend. this time i didnt change the spark plug, i just turned it off for a minute, kicked it back over and it ran fine, but when i would try to haul *** in 4th & 5th, it would lose power and it would basiclly die, then i would back off the throtle and down shift, it would come back to life.

ive never had a problem with it before, untill this weekend.
so i was wondering is it time to clean the carb? (probaly)
but also when it dies out, feels like it has a short somewhere, because it would die then start running again.
im confused and need some help.
thanks

maybe the coils is trying to die on you (higher rpm range)?
or jet maybe plugged....
thats all I can think of....
might try swapping coils between the 2 R's you have..?

pull the bowl drain out and see if you have good fuel flow .. also maybe your petcock is getting plugged,,,,,,,, it sounds like fuel flow

make sure your stator didn't get wet.

I suffered from a fuel starvation problem on my '84 250R for a while, on that trike whenever I would loose fuel flow (due to a partially clogged petcock) it would start to starve and caused the trike to run real lean. For my problem, adding a clear in-line fuel filter (the kind two-stroke dirt bike's use, the four stroke kind won't work) helped me to solve my intermittent fuel starvation problem.

It sure sounds like you're suffering from an electrical problem to me. It could be the coil but personally I'd take a close look at the stator. My '84 'R was giving me a similar problem and I found quite a lot of corrosion on the stator. I cleaned it off with some steel wool and installed a new gasket and so far haven't had any more problems with it (or at least, not in the electrical department).

HTH and it's good to see another OC local on the board! :)

thanks guys for your help. well i checked out my stator, and there was some condensation in there, so i let it dry out. the next day i went riding, i had no problems, it ran like a champ. thanks again:headbang: :headbang:

I'm glad to hear it's running better, now you may want to replace the seal which goes on the stator cover to keep it from getting wet in the future.

HTH :)
