Well, I drag raced a 84 Tecate with light mods (reeds and fresh top end, dg pipe and silencer). I have 85 250r with fmf silencer and exhaust, K and N Filter and minor other stuff. I just rebuilt carb and clutch. I guess the tecate shocked me with that fat front tire and looking like a green 250sx, lol! He didn't get the holeshot but damn, in the mid range he just motored by me and I caught him after I got to 6th gear and my top end was way more than his. What can I do to get a better hit in the midrange? Mine is far more stable and easier to ride. Help me improve my midrange, as I am open to any suggestions.

is it a Bottom? Midrange? Topend? Try a different pipe. Is the cylinder ported? If so, is it a MX port? Drag port? With 2 strokes all these things go into giving your particular engine its characteristics. Compression make a difference too. higher compression gives ya better torque, and lower compression lets the engine rev higher. A smaller Carb will give a bit more response and less topend, Change your gearing. even changing the tire size could help ya. 2 strokes are tricky. I am in NO WAY an expert, but I do know there are all kinds of ways to tune a 2 stroke. Real hard to give advice unless we know all the current mods to the engine/cylinder. Heck, even then, I would only be forwarding info I have read up on, and heard from others with 2 strokes. I did my first port job on my new Tecate cylinder, and I will let ya know how it performs compared to the one that is on it now. If it runs good, then GREAT, if it doesn't, then OH WELL, grab another cylinder and try again (or pay our local GURU to do it up right :hail: )

The tecate is a 5speed so yeah you'll have more top end than it does. what tires are you and he running (size, type)?
It may not have as good of a suspension setup as the R, but the '84-5 T3 is a close match engine-wise. On a moto-x track you should smoke him with the better suspension, but in a straight line it's much closer.
is this a buddy of yours that you can run alot just for the heck of it? I could be wrong, but I don't think midrange is your problem. Top end you came on around b/c of the gearing differences. The '84-5 T3 is known for having weak power down low & a hard hit top end. That's part of the reason they added powervalves on the '86 models.
Try running each other in the same gears from an even roll & see what happens. If you both hit it at the same time I'm betting you'll pull him at first but at the top of the rpm range in each gear he'll pull back on you.

We raced several times and most times I hooked up better on low end, but he was in 5th gear pulling away and I was in 3rd or 4th, and we are both running stock sprockets and 20 in rear tires. It was numerous 1/2 mile drags, and longer the R smoked him on top end. I am going to race hime with my 18 in rears as 20 is stock for 250r and 22 for the 84 tecate(he had 20 in tires). It was a blast finally having someone that could provide decent competition. We both destroyed a Z400, but that was easy! No biggie, I am finally going to install my new power reeds and see what that does. They are TDR reeds, maybe that'll do something! It was a blast, I can only imagine what a 86 or 87 tecate would do with the better suspension and ergonomics!

A 36mm carb would be a good next step.

I run a trx250r carb in my "good" R. It was a PITA to fit it into the stock intake boot, but it works. You could also get a rad valve or equivalent.

to improve your mid range hit with the mods you have listed ( not knowing what version of fmf pipe you have ) i would recomend the following in this order...
1. CR 250 head gasket ( 86-96 years will be fine )
2. boyesen reeds
3. 36mm PWK carb
4. boyesen rad valve
5. porting
p.s. if you get the rad valve no need to buy reeds seperatly they come with it
