I am very interested in building a 500r... I got a rollin 250r chassis and a line on a 500cr engine.
what year should the engine be for easy of installation?
What year is the best engine over all, I heard the 87 was one of the strongest engines.
Just looking for a general place to start on the project... I figure it not going to be a two day project but would like to have it togather by mid summer...
any advice or problems i might encounter would be great..
thanks...

Ok, i went and did a search and found a ton of good info on the 500 swap...
I think i got enough info to get started. But still curious to what year enigine would be best for the project.
Talked with my freind who works on frames, going to start the project next week hopefully..
I might even try to make a little how to and how not too for the site. because there seem to be allot of interest, but not all is explain in "STUPID" so i can understand...
Good old Trial and error...

Plus knowing that i am not going to be able to do it all my self..

Hey Kasey did you use the ignition off the 500 or the 250R parts? and what about the carb is it the 500? Just lookin into the same swap myself, and one more question is it still a good trail bike, or just a flat out sand bike?

i used the 500 ignition ,, you can't use 250 ignition on a 500,, different timing ,stroke and flywheel,,,, there totally different engines!! the carb i used is alot bigger than the 250 too,,,its a carb i had and modified to use on the 500,, as far as a trail machine it has so much torque and explosive midrange it just frys the tires with a flick of the throttle ,,, its a handful in the woods thats why i have 250r's,,,, i put holeshots on the 500 to break in a new motor,, there is no way to get it to hook up at all ,, i was doing 4th gear starts and spinning the tires for 200' without shifting ,,, tires wouldn't last very long like that,,,lol but it was fun,,, on the other hand the 500 is at home in the dunes it has long leggs and loves to stretch them out,,,,

yeah I knew about the different stokes and timing but I just wondered if the coil or anything was the same or not. so it's basically a sand beast huh, its that powerfull? just spins the tires in the dirt, sounds like fun for pismo but not round here. You got a twist throttle on the 500 right? how do you like the twist on a 250R? I'd like some input on it, thanks.
