Yep they are thin steel. Just sand it down and use a good primer on it. So the paint will stick well to it. And you should be good to go.

If you are going to the sand, dont bother. The sand will clean them up for you, and I have tried every kind of paint available, and the sand takes that off too.

I think it is a girl thing...but the rust is ugly. I want it pretty :D . I so I don't mind more scratches later. The only thing i don't want is flaking that drives me bonkers.. Anyway thx Jen

you know, i dont see the point in painting them. i had to take my skidplate off to get to the oil plug so in the process i bent it all back into original shape and what not and painted it up, well 2 weeks later and i went to drain the oil again (i was flushing it out) and the skid plate was just as bad i wouldent waste my time with the paint. i ended up bending the hole bigger so i could use the skid plate for what its ment to be used for and still get to the plug but as for the paint, i cant get anything to stay on it, i think its the frequent mud and sand baths but who knows?
Well Jenn it's just one of the things that painted all the time . i just quick wire brush it and paint becauce it wont last that long any way. If you don't hit rocks with it you can look in to baked enamal paint. It is a harder couting that sand will not hirt.
