A friend of mine just got a 84 200x off ebay...not a bad price...smoked a little just like described. Rode if for twenty minutes and the clutch blew up  Oh well..not sellers fault..no way he could have known.

Anyways...I had a 200x back in 86 but I can't remember...is the rear sprocket supposed to be loose like this?? Looks like the only thing keeping this thing from sliding around on the axle is one snap ring.

Yep the snap ring is the only thing holding it on. And them rubber bushings are a little wobble. If it wiggles around a little that is normal. But if it is flopping arond real bad then you shoud get the bushings for it.

He might want to check the rear axle bearings while he's back there. 83,84 and 85 were common to wear out bearings. You can usually feel worn rear axle bearings by holding on to one end of the handlebar and try to rock the trike from side to side, if you feel or hear slop they need replacing. You can get some slop from the hubs, so have a friend watch while you rock it to locate the source.;)
