View Full Version : the end all list... TOP SPEED of "my" trike
Black Sheep
03-25-2004, 09:35 AM
here is a list of the "aproximate" Average top speed of the majority of the most popular 3Wheeled ATV's. this list is based on severall criteria including magazine articals and test, manufactures "claimed" top speed, ( before lawsuits the manufactures were not afraid to post top speed in there spec sheets), and personall experiance using such equpiment as radar guns, atv mounted factory aproved and tested speedometers, side by side riding with comparable ( i.e. XL on-off road m/c's) by riding on flat paved sufaces on distance's of over two miles. (how fast your buddy, the cops, or whoever had to accelerate to to catch up to you on your trike is not the same).
NOTE, this is Based on brand new showroom stock 3 wheelers. NO modifications or 15yr plus machines. rebuilt or not. (there is more to a rebuild then just piston and rings).
Tiger 500..........................................................................90+mph
Tiger 250..........................................................................85+mph
(note Tigers were not production trikes. each Tiger was hand made to original customer specs. this is just a average estimate)

hey trike, thats not "hard core" as i've previously been told.
ok first i must admit it i've wimped out, sold out, biotched out, or whatever you guys want to bash me on. i've always been a hard core moto head and hard core trail rider. 250R's and 350X's all the way. well not anymore i'm now the owner of a 85 250SX
  :D
but....MR. ATC...if you would like to post the top speed for an 85 250sx, a few of us would be interested. thanks:)

i have had my atc 250r at 73 mph as read by my g.p.s. i believe it is the original motor. keep in mind that i was at 4800-5000 feet above sea level. this was in some mud flats close to the Bonneville salt flats. many land speed records have been broken there. it is 1 hour from my house. i realy doubt a stock one has gone much faster...80 is hard to believe... i havent realy found any other places near me i can "openerup" all the way. oh and i had Melissa's r at 71.8. it is the cleanest looking low hour stocker in the world! lol

question question how fast will my 85 250sx go?!?!?!?! :lala: :p
haha, fast isnt the word!
for wild, I have had my 85-R up to 76 recently according to the GPS... and I have it geared down to a 12 in the front. I think the numbers you posed are pretty close.

Hmm, somehow I am thinking those top speeds are a bit high. Would like to know the conditions when these speeds were reach. Highly dought an 85 or 86 R would reach 80 mph in stock trim. Not sure mine would reach that right now, and its making 51 rwhp.

12 tooth is gnarly to say the least... the front end never had a problem bringing itself up, but now it takes much lets.... a simple tap on the throttle and up she goes. needless to say I saw a majior difference, mostnotably in third gear. its right where I want to be now, I start in second and it seems to give me a little more stretch rather than using first gear like I used to do.
Duner... I hit 76 on a flat paved road at 2150.0 el , 65 degrees temp and roughly 29.1 humidity level. I dont know how much more it had cause I had to shut it down( neighbor hood streets are only so long), I have some mods that were listed above.

At that elevation that is quite impressive. 76 mph is flat booken. How did you get that number? Car next to you, or radar gun? Good pictures of your trike as well, very clean :hail:

I got the speed by WAAS enabled GPS, which by every car I have checked it in is pretty close. I could be one or two MPH off... but I am sure its not more than that. Thanks for the props by the way.

vegas250RR why dont you try that with your sx ide like to know roughly how fast my big reds go and there basicley the same motor and rear end and not a holelot in weight difrences all three of my bikes are near mint shape and your sx apears to be near mint so it should be some what close.

cool i dont know if theres any diference in the big red carb and the sx but the rest of the trike mecancley seems to be the same so they should be close to the same but the sx is a bit sportyer so its probley a little faster. out of my three bikes one of the 86s and the 85 seems to be a bit faster than the other 86:shrug: and i dont know why becase the one that seems slower has the least km's on her and is a little closer to all orginal but all three are in preety sweet shape.

I flipped a quick U'y and headed back like I was test riding it... he didnt even bat an eye, he had bigger fish to fry (speeders through the school zone)

My bone stock, low time 250R hit 70.3 on GPS. That at around 600' elevation on a cool (60's), dry day. I personally doubt they would ever hit 80 (stock), but I don't know enough to say for sure.
As the accuacy of GPS, according to my Garmin Legend I hit a max speed of 134mph walking around the block one time. ;)

RTJas :Di have the same gps as vegas! but as for the walkind around the block deal, i have seen this happen one other time. it happened to a guy i was riding with. his read a max speed of i think 439 mph. this guy is a comunications expert. former military. he explained it as a glich that sometimes happens when you are transfered from one satalight (sp) to another. if you get close readings in more than one run they are likely all correct acording to him.
Vegas, what year is your gps? mine is a garman etrex, just the same but no button on the front..? and the screen display is different.....it is 4-5 years old.

well on my little trip this weekend to Eagle Valley, NV I hit a top speed of 54.6 on the SX... I ran her out about a mile to hit that speed but for the altitude I was at I was really impressed!! 6800' oh and by the way, the fuel injected sportsman may have taken off a little faster, but in stock trim it never ran away from me =)
