HELP! I'm trying to remove the rear hubs on my 85 Big Red. I already removed castle nut and brake and backing plate on right side. Also removed castle nut on left side. Tried tapping hubs off on both sides with a hammer and block of wood on inside (brute force method). Don't want to brake the hub by too much pounding. Is there some type of trick to gettin these confounded hubs OFF? Probably some corrosion on spline seized it up. Sprayed penetrating oil in toward spline, but I doubt any can get in there to set. Just runs out on floor. By the way, I have a shop manual, but it is scarce on details. It just says "remove hubs". Is there some kind of hub puller I could make or a magic incantation or spell I could use?. There has got to be a huge amount of experience at removing hubs and axles amoungst you guys. Any and all advise would be appreciated. Spring is here and I wanna ride like a madman!!. The reason I'm removing the hubs and axle is cause I hear scraping, popping and grinding when I rotate weels. Not a good sound, needless to say. Probably bad bearings or worse. Normally I'm fairly good at mech stuff, but this ones got me stumped. Thanx.:headbang:

My problem is usually with them wanting to fall off. Just keep soaking it for a few days then try some heat. I can never keep it straight whether metal expands or contracts when heated. I think it expands so you could get a small propane torth & try heating the hub up. I'm sure someone will correct me on this if I've got it backwards. Good Luck

You are correct, metal expands when heated. Try to keep the heat on the hub and off the axle, you don't want both to expand. I finally used a two jawed puller and boogered up the end of the axle, but they came off with a bang.
