duckie,
From recent experience, let me ask, did you back all of the way off of the valves at the tappet when you put this thing back together? Are the lobes on the cam in the down position? Is the tit on the camshaft sprocket, which holds the rotor of the magneto, in the about 4 o'clock position rather than the about 10 o'clock position?
I found the simplest way to time everything is to do what I mentioned, get the timing mark straight up on the lower end, and take the camshaft sprocket loose and align the sprocket, slip the chain over it and put it back on the cam. After doing this, align the timing mark on the cam sprocket with the timing mark directly above it. When you do this, take a flash light and look at the timing mark on the crank. If you don't see the mark on the crank, rotate the cam sprocket a little and see where the timing mark for the crank is. This will tell you which direction to move the chain. It is very easy to do it this way, you may have to move the chain several times, but when you line it up, you will know it is right without any doubt. While doing this, I pushed a screwdriver down into my camshaft chain tensioner, and put as much slack in the chain as I could get, this helped a lot.
Also, don't forget to take the spark plug out so that you don't have to fight the compression of the motor while doing this. I also used a screwdriver, positioned at the bottom of the cam sprocket, to help move the sprocket in the direction that I wanted it to go. This was much easier than trying to rotate the chain and sprocket by hand.
Good luck.

I forgot to mention, if you need for me to scan the directions from Clymer, I'll e-mail them if necessary. Let me know.

next you have to set the timing.
1. line up the "f"
2. line up the "!" on the cdi with the "!" on the cdi plate, tighten the screws. be sure to put the bolt in the end of the cam!!! (i forgot)
3. set the valves. it will not crank if they are to tight.
5. with the plug out roll the engine over by hand a few times to make sure nothing binds up.
5. put a plug in and have fun!!

Did 200X-basket send what you needed, or do you still need the pages from Clymer? Let me know, I'll send them tonight if you still need them. - Ted

i might have it now but u 'm not for sure yet if i have it right pic's from the book would deffinetly help
Make shore you turn it over by hand so you don't bend valves if it's out of time.

I just set my timing the other night and my valves for the first time, my bike was rebuilt awhile back by some idiot that didn't even both setting the cdi to line up right, timing was retarded, and the bike has been running rich and sputtering, backfiring for a long time. I had a hotter plug in the bike, and had the clip in the leanest position, and still it ran rich I coudln't believe the difference in it now. Now it will pull hard and doesn't miss a lick. Definatley worth the time and effort! Don't forget to check the gap between the pulse generator and the black box on the cdi. Gap is supposed to be between .012 and .016, mine was at least .016 maybe more, and I set it at about .014.
