85 250r engine vs later model 250r engines??

what are the differences between the 85 250r engines and the later trx 250r engines? what is the deal with the spacer plater that i see all the time. can i put the later model cylinder on my 85 250r? will the cylinder off of a 250r dirt bike fit on my 250r? i have a ton of questions about my new trike that i am trying to figure out.

You can fit CR cylinders on with some major mods to the frame. a Guy on Desert USA did it but says the mod isn't worth the time or effort.

Also, they changed the porting slightly from year to year.
