I pulled the head and block off because I was stupid enough to pull out the bolt for the cam chain roller. Anyway, the head didn't seem to seat quite properly on the crankcase studs, and the cam sprocket didn't line up quite where it should (about 3mm off). I couldn't get the camshaft in, no matter how much I wiggled, rotated, or gently tapped it with a rubber mallet. Eventually I put the cover back on, torqued down the acorn nuts and normal nuts, and everything lined up properly, and with a little wiggling the camshaft went in.
Except the cam sprocket and chain. I put in some bolts (turned out to be the wrong ones, the ones that held on the recoil starter - both were 10mm, but the starter bolts were way longer. Stupid.) and tightened them down, but the chain is rubbing against the hole in the cylinder head, such that it is difficult to even rotate the alternator with the middle bolt. What could cause this? I'm assuming I tightened or seated something improperly.
Oh, and if anyone wants a laugh: I put in the proper bolts and tightened them down--too much. I hear this SCCCCRRRRRRCHHHHH sound, which I thought were some of the tiny bolts in the cam chain poking out through the hole in the cylinder head. The sound was actually the cam sprocket snapping perfectly in half across the screw holes. Looks like I'm buying a new one.
