It is a over heat light. It should come on for a couple seconds when you first start it.

is that all its does is come on when you first start it? its not some kind of temp or netural light?

It should come on for a few when you first start it up...If it comes on when you are riding you are overheating....Just like Twgranger said

thanks,

I will have to get the correct light to plug in to it then since it does have some importance.

ya it better work. the only way you will know if the water pump seal goes out and puts all the coolent in the gear box.

I hooked a light into the wireharness where the indicatorlight goes. this light comes on when started, but after a few minutes of riding it did not go off. could I have a bad thermostat? how long should it take for the light to turn off.

Put the thermostatic swich in water and with a Pocket tester heat and check the different water temps

32 -208 degrees = discontinuity
More than 221 degrees + or - 37 degrees = Continuity
Remove heat and let cool down from
221 to 208 degrees= Continuity
Less than 98 Degrees= Discontinuity

If it doesnt pass this test then replace your switch
If it does then it could be your CDI (Lighting Coil)
Good luck

if the lighting coil (cdi) was bad then would the headlights also work?

the trike starts/idles fine the headlights work both hi/low beam

Did you test the switch yet...That is probably it..If your lights are working then your CDI is probably fine..

Maybe Yamahas are different, but I always associate CDI with ignition (capacitive discharge ignition)

I dont have time to test the thermostat right now.

I won an e-bay auction for the radatiors all the hoses the thermostat for 30 bucks.

when I switch out my radatior(pin hole leak) I will switch out the thermostat also.

then test the old one after that.

cant hurt to have spare parts...

That was a good deal...Let me know what you find out...

250sx I am not sure what you are trying to say about the CDI other than I think you think it just runs the spark????

When you first start it. unplug the temp switch, the light should go out. if the sending switch is bad. all it is is a gounding switch. if it stays on the prob is in wiring. a short to ground.

If it was grounded out wouldnt it just not work at all??

It is my understanding that it is a switch that acts just like the thermostat only it lets you know that it is too hot...I think this switch is just open all the time,Thus sending power to the bulb...

well I was messing with the wires today and unplugged and replugged in them. the light noe works correctly. well it turns on then turns off after a few seconds. so I am guessing it was a bad connection. hopefully it all works.

bad thing is one of the rad. hoses sprung a leak... looks like it was cut.

When working properly the light should come on for about 3 sec. then go off...Soooo, sounds like you found the problem...Good job...
