I put a new set of rings on a 85 70. when i put it back together forst i busted a stud so i have to take a part again. anyways when i put it back together i am sure the timing gear is not set in the right place.
i need to know when the flywheel marks are straight up and down where does the timing marks on the cam gear supposed to be pointing?

The marks on the Head are towards the top, so if its in the frame you looking at it it is to the left.....there should be a notch. The timing chain wheel has the 0 on it. It points to it. I cannot remeber where they are in realation to the flywheel, but if noone answers that, I will look it up.

the only thing i noticed on the head was two peices of metal like tabs that stuck out and the cam cover slides on to the two tabs for placment is that what you are talking about or does the o on the gear go to the top?

I am fresh out of heads, to show you, but you have to look closely the notch is there.Where the timing cover goes there are 3 holes, it is dead center of 2 of those holes, it will be towards the top of the head, so in lateral position to the left.

Align the T on the flywheel. The cam sprocket shouldn't be on the cam at this time. You'll see a large hole in the end of the cam with no threads. This also points to the V in the head. In this diagram the "O" is the hole the cam sprocket goes in in the head, and the arrow is poining to where the V should be. ------>O If your looking at the cam sprocket hole the V would be at the 9:00 o'clock position. Slip the sprocket into the chain and into the sprocket area in the head and align the O on the cam sprocket with the V also. The 3 cam bolt holes should be very close to lining up to the threaded holes in the cam. Put in the 3 bolts and make sure while the T is pointing towards the V on the side case the O points towards the V in the head.
