still pretty new to this, took the 250r out last night and blew out the rear shock. first question: is the shock itself rebuildable?
something i don't understand: i've got oil all over the place, but i tried to pump up the shock with an air compressor to find the leak but couldn't get air to come out anywhere. is this type of test possible? how much pressure does it take?
any help with this would be great, funds are tight right now, any idea how much rebuilding this thing is gonna run me?
thanks,
steve

yes the shocks are rebuildable but they have nitrogen in them around 750psi worth!!!
cost about 250 to rebuild one around here. thats better than 750 for a new one.

They are very spendy to have rebuilt. You might want to watch ebay for a good used one to replace it.
I am going to move this over to the tech forum.

I have my own buisness and i rebuild shocks for 150.00-200.00 i also have a 86 ATC250R rear shock with low hours for sale. the correct amount of nitrogen gas for a 85 250R is 185-230psi. for a 86 250R its 284-327 psi.

thanks for the help guys. i've located a used shock for $50 and am likely gonna go that route. but, i'm wondering if MRATC is willin to share some info to help me rebuild this thing myself? i've done front forks but would like to add the knowledge and experience of doing a rear as over time it'd get pretty expensive sending shocks out everytime my fat :booty: blows one!!! LOL
i'm gonna order a manual monday and when it gets here i'm gonna see if i think i can take it on.
where do i get the shock charged once rebuilt? i'm guessing the local bike shop right.

don250R yes the oil and nitrogen are seperated
Fuzzy no, at this time i do not. i am new to computers and am trying to learn i hope to have a site very soon. my buisness name is TOTAL PERFORMANCE CONCEPTS my e-mail address is TPCTrikes@aol.com
pyxistorts it is to complicted to expaine over the internet but i will give you some advice. if you buy a factory HONDA manuel it tells you how to rebuild the shock also if you've ever done cartridge forks it is very similar internally. also RACE TECH has a instructional video on shock rebuilding.
200xbasket you need a special tool to charge your shock motion pro makes a very good one

will a regular tire air chuck not work? i was planning on putting a pressure gause on the line and hooking it to the nitrogen bottle. just throttle the flow until you have the correct pressure.

i would reccomend you have the phone on and dial 9-1 then try your idea, it will be 66% faster getting the ambulance to you.
but really the correct tool screws onto the fitting to prevent it being blown off.
