found this early 80's cr 500 for sale. it appers to have an air cooled motor :confused. gonna call the guy tommorrow. think it would fit in an 83r? anybody know how the old cr's ran? the only potential problem i can see is that the chain drives from the opposite side. would a rear from a water cooled r be bolted into the air r frame? looks feasible to me. i think it could make for a killer fast ride:headbang: :demon:

well since u can weld and torch which or really good skills it shouldnt be to hard and i honestly dont think parts for the air R's are that hard to find were are u guys looking?
the cr500 shouldnt be to hard to find parts for.

Is it a 500 or 480? The air cooled 500's had some nasty internal problems. I believe they also made less HP then the 480's too.

so kasey, what do you think? should i stay away from it? even if i do a total rebuild before putting it in, will i have reliability issues?

For the price it is going for definately look into it. The roller could probably be parted out on either eBay or one of the few CR500 boards lurking around the net for what you would have into it.
Parts for this year 500R are VERY hard to find (most of the internal stuff will convert over with the '85 500R watercooled parts). So this being said it is very hard to find parts for (pretty much a 2-year bottom end).
Best of luck

I have a line on a aircooled cr500 also. I was thinking we could get away with reversing the axle bearing carrier , then make a new brake bracket.
But the aircooled 500 is known for major problems;

http://www.off-road.com/dirtbike/hon/cr50084.html
Plus there other things to concider like no lighting coils, reverse kicker, fuel tank clearance ( I've never seen a 480cc trike with a factory tank), cdi and coil wiring ect...
The problem with a 300cc kit is theres no pistons avalible.
So I'm still wondering if a well piped, ported, carbed and tuned 250 would put out some decent horsepower?
Anyway good luck.................

Troll i have talked to trinity racing before because i was thinking about a 300R kit and asked about the parts still that are still made. Trinity happened to say that Pro-X still makes the kit they dont advertise it any more but still have them in their warehouses and still make them. Trinity also mentioned that they wll CNC you one if they cant find one.
thats wat they told me about a month ago

Dont feel bad,,,,with the drive on the wrong side and all it sounded like a nitemare of a project anyway.....Find a 480 to stuff in your trike.....The only drawback to them is the spark advance was regulated by the amount of voltage produced instead of rpm which caused some rough running......But thats easier to live with than a project that most men would never finish....

What about fuel tank clearance, no lighting coil, reverse kick and exaust mods.
I figure there do-able, but still need to be cocidered.
Looks like alot of 480cc stuff is still avalible, like aftermarket clutches, reed's, gskt's ectt.
It's alot better than a air-cooled 500cc for sure............

I was strictly speaking about the engines drawbacks alone.....I'm sure its quite a job to swap it into a 3wheeler....The pipe would be an expensive problem too....

coyote killer, have you ever stuffed a CR480 or Cr 500 motor in a 250R chassie?
zya5.0, putting a air cooled CR 480 motor in a 83/84 250R is not too big a deal. count yourself lucky you did not get the air 500 your better off with the 480. if you really want the extra cc's consider this. the air 500 was actually only 490cc ( or something close ) overboring a 480 .80 would bring you just as many if not more CC plus the sprocket is on the same side.

Nope,,,,I was just making the logical comment that the right side drive 480 swap would be much more feasible than the left side drive 500.....You got some sorta problem with that???

no actually i did not. i just asked a question because of that satement and this one...
"......But thats easier to live with than a project that most men would never finish...."
i DO have a problem with people giving advice on a subject they no nothing about and then copping attitudes with those who have

Actually i didnt even give advice,,,,I just made a comment.,...And my statement about it being a project that most men wouldnt finish is because if you will look in any classified ads you will see tons of conversion projects that are half finished for dirt cheap just so the owner of the project can rid himself of the headache....
Also,,,,most people will cop an attitude when someone gets in their face.....I'm no different.....

swapping the drive side is no big thing, and not by any means the hardest part of that conversion,,, i have done it when i put a 86 CR125 in a 84 chassis,, radiator and pipe was more of a challenge ,,, :D :D :D

for getting the post back on topic:D i'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. it's more a matter of i hate when i lose an auction by a couple bucks:doh: especially when i was willing to bid up to 550:mad: oh well. i'll probably just go back to my original plan of the 295 kit with all the mods that have been discussed here recently and see how it turns out.
