Does anyone's '84 R's have a problem that when it runs out of gas, or you forget to turn the gas on, either/or, that the idle raises really high and it sounds like it is gonna blow up, and it wont shut off if you kill it with the switch, you have to stop, put it in first, and dump the clutch. Any help will be great. Thanks.

Any motor that runs out of gas does this. Basically your making it really lean for a short period, and it revs to the moon (it tends to be more pronounced on two strokes for some reason). Thats how I can tell when something is running low on gas (lawn mower, boat, weed eater, trike, etc.)

On my friends 85 R it doesnt do that, and on mine it revs for a long time, if i let it, maybe 30 seconds or more:shrug:

i had a kdx175 dirtbike that done the samething. the only way you could get it to cut off was to ride the brakes and choke it down. it too was a aircooled 2 stroke.:)

This has happened (once) to my '84 250R one time when I left for a ride and ran out of gas (made it back to camp on reserve).

As I understand it the reason why two strokes in particular rev real high just before they run out of fuel is because since the oil and gas are mixed together when you run the carb. dry you're basically starving the engine of oil since it burns-off before the remnants of your gas does (or vice-versa).

That's how it was explained to me. Whatever the reason I basically never let my trikes run out of fuel. If I want to drain the carb. for some reason I just drain it from the bowl.

HTH :)

Hmm ok thanks for the explanation. I just wonder if it is mainly the aircooled Rs that do that specifically because my friends 85 R never has done that.....Strange...................
