I just pulled apart a 110 motor that had seized from rust in the cylinder. I got the cylinder off, took the piston off, and found this:

It looks like it will wipe off, but I'm concerned about the flaked off rust in the rest of the engine. Do I split this one?

The cool thing about this engine is it probably had less than 20 hours on it. Very clean.

Wow! That's some rust! I'm sure one of the engine gurus will be able to help you out.

I would tare it down and clean. don't need the rust in the bearings. or rusted bearings.

looks like someone took the spark plug out of that and dumped a bucket of water down the cylendr than put the plug back in and let it sit...lol or its from condensation any who, i would tear it down, but it kinda just looks like it was gunk that was sittin at the bottem of the cases, you might be able to cheat and just flush it out really good, but w/e :P

While it just looks like sludge, if it is rust, I would do a full teardown. Chances are, if there is rust on the crank halves, there is rust in the bearings and what not..which is no good, haha. Either way, sludge or not, I'd tear it down.

complete tear down is neccessary, and dont just clean the rust off, if there is a large build up of rust on any part, replace it. and yes, including the crankshaft. that small amount of metal that has been removed via rust, will throw the balance of the crankshaft off, leading to premature failure of the bearings, excessive engine vibration, and possibly causing the crankshaft to grenade due to both of those reasons
