I have been having some problems out of my bike. This bike has gradually gotten worse the last 6 months. It will not stay idleing on its own, it just dies. The last couple of days I have probably ridden about 15 miles. The bike runs good. But, as soon as I let off the throttle it will die within 5-10 seconds. As long as I keep giving it the throttle it will run forever. I recently changed the spark plug, so I know its not this. The bike does not fllod. It starts first or second pull almost every time. Any suggestions?

My 85 does the same thing if it's really cold but it's usaully fine after it warms up. If it's been sitting for a long amount of time before you started riding the carborator could be clogged try replacing the jet's I think there is an idleing jet I could be wrong it should say in the owners manual. If none of this is it I suggest taking it to the folks who know best at honda. Good luck

Hey fuz or any other moderator I suggest moving this to general tech. Where the tech folk visit. :D

Try moving the clip on the needle get down a notch. Remove the top of the carb where the cable hooks on to it. And you will see a small c-clip on the needle. That can be moved up and down to adjust your carb. You will need to drop it down a notch so that it holds the needle up a little farther giving it more gas at idel. Give it a try and see if it dosnt make it idel better. If it still dosnt want to idle. You will have to take the carb off and clean it out. You might have some gunk stuck in the carb.
I am going to move this to the tech section.

ok, so the simple fix is not the answer. if the machine is low on power it could also be the valves need to be adjusted. was this a gradual problem or over night? is the gas old, could it have some water in it? the spark could be weak. you could also have a vacuum leak. check the carb to manifold and manifold to head bolts tight.

This has been a gradual problem. 3 or 4 months ago it would set and idle for 2-3 minutes then die. The progression has gradually gotten worse. Now it dies within 10 seconds if you don't give it the throttle. I know it is not bad gas. The bike has plenty of power. It doesn't smoke at all. This bike still has the original tires. I have has this bike about 2.5 years and I have run it alot, so I wouldn't think it has a gummed up carb. Except in the winter I have rode this bike at least once a week. I tried adjusting the throttle play, no luck.
Someone explain in detail how to move the clip cown on top of the carb. Do you screw off the cap?
If I take the carb out and clean it do you need to buy a new gasket?

i kinda doubt it is the clip thing. that is for 1/4 to full throttle. is the top end noisy? timing chain slapping around. there is a article in the tech section on the main page that describes how to adjust your valves. I would start there because it is FREE. I would also check the plug gap and read teh plug to see if it rich ot lean. if it was lean i would look for a air leak. the loose carb mounts. if it is rich i would then look at a bad coil or the carb settings. there is a set screw on the carb that controls the amount of air at an idle, but i doubt this is your problem.

if you do decide to change the clip setting.
1. remove the top of the carb.
2. remove the cable fron the slide/needle
3. look at the current groove that the "c" clip is in.
4. move it down to richen the carb
5. move it up to lean the carb
