after changing my oil in my 85' honda big red, when i was putting the plug back in,i think it striped out......the female threads, i assume......it got almost snug.......then....got slack.....and made another round........i have it somewhat tight now.....but know that it is not tight enough........i have not taken it back out and looked at it........if it is the female threads of the oil drain.......any ideas? thanks

You could try chasing out the threads with a thread chaser.

And something I just found out today. I belive the valve cover caps and the oil drain plug are the same thing....

a quick temp fix is to wrap thread around the base of the bolt

an old trick to find the bad threads is to very carefully wrap the plug in teflon tape, making sure that everything is nice and neat and in the opposite direction of the threads. Screw in the bolt, just finger tight and slowly twist it back out trying to touch the sides as little as poosible. once it is out the signs should be obvious if it is the female part, if the lines are all in order, it is the male part. You can also do it with a cast made from some plumming epoxy. :)

You could try this hillbilly fix. Get yourself one of those appropriately sized replacement car rubber frost plugs. Insert into the drain hole and snug it up!

hummm........that sounds like it would get me by......i've not been to the auto parts store yet........i hope they have one that will fit......i have never seen one that small before........the o.d. of the oil drain plug looks to be about 1/2 inch..........that soundes small to be on a car to me.......the only ones i've seen were like 1&3/4..........we are talking about freeze plugs in the block of a motor right?..........kinda the same thing as a rubber boat plug?.........has anyone ever seen one of these that is that small???......1/2''

another idea would be tap it out to a 14mm by 1.75thread pitch and use a lt250 quadracerdrain plug:thumbsup: ive done that a few times and since almost all trikes and quads have a12mm hole for the drainplug you have plenty of meat to work with yet. and just make sure you have a copper sealing washer on it b/c on soem bikes it may be a little too long. and it shouldt need to be cut down but if u use the washer it should work fine.

one thing that i have done.. in boat motors is wrap a thin layer of teflon tape around a bolt, mix up some jbweld fairly hot.. screw it in VERY slowly, to the bad hole.. let it set for about 5 minutes, or when the stuff sets up, screw it out, remove the teflon tape, screw it back in walaha, redneck helicoil!

Don't tighten it too tight, I think it will seal without snugging it up. You can get several uses out of one plug if you take it easy.
