What I first thought to be a stuck piston - turns out there is something??? floating on top of the piston. Not allowing the engine to turn over completely. I seen the piece of whatever through the spark plug hole, but I can't get at it. So, I started tearing into the motor. I pulled the motor and I have it torn down to the cam and timing chain. My question is - How do I get to the top of the piston. I removed every bolt and nut I could see and I can't get the top off. Am I missing something? I'm in the works of getting a manual, which I should have waited for. But, now that I have the engine half torn apart , and I know what the problem is - I would like to get to the root of the problem. Like what is the UnIdentified Object in the cylinder, and where did it come from? Any help getting me to the top of the Piston would be greatly appreciated.

If you have all the bolts out of the head. You can try gently prying between the head and the cylinder. Sometimes the headgasket gets stuck on there pretty good. And it might be the only thing holding it up. But be gentle. You dont want to break any fins. If you have to. Take a rubber mallet and gice it a coulpe of taps. And see if it comes off.

I have tried prying and tapping - nothing gives. I removed 4 bolts and 4 cap nuts from the top - also a single long bolt that is located below the CDI. Is there any other bolts or nuts I may be missing?

I took the timing chain off the cam. How about lifters? Do they need to be removed?

There is one bolt on the side that holds the chain adjuster. I assume that is the one that you are talking about?. And no you dont have to remove anything from the head. You should be able to pull the head and cylinder as one piece even. Not sure what is holding it on. But one i did i hade to run a razor blade between the head and cylinder to cut the gasket. Because it was stuck together so tight.

Fuzzy - You were right on both accounts. I had to remove the bolt from the timing chain guide AND run a razor blade around the gasket. THANKS!!:D

Know I now why the engine wasn't turning over. Busted Valve
I got a little more background on the engine. The upper timing chain sprocket has some teeth that are half missing, which caused the timing to jump and break the valve. Luckily the original owner (i.e. Father-in-law) had a 200 i can pull parts from. Like upper sprocket. However, I am on the lookout for a carb - If you know someone.

Thanks again for ALL of your help.

YIPPY!!!!!:) . I am glad you got it off. They can be a real bugger some times. Good thing you have another motor to take parts from. You should be able to bolt the 200 top end right to the 185s cylinder.

And as far as the carb goes. Check out ebay. There are a number of machines that use the same carb. Like the 200/200s/200e/200es. And if you want to go a little bigger. You can use a 200x carb on it. Its 2mm bigger then your stock one and will give you a little more power. And the jets are removable with out haveing to take the carb apart. Other wise post a add in the classified forum here. Maybe one of the members here will have one.
