I was looking for motors on e-bay for my 85 tri-z and I came across a YZ 490 engine, I looked at this for awhile and it looks like it will fall right in, I'm sure there will be some fabricationg but it looks like it might be very minimal. The motor I have now seems to run ok but I bought it online and when it arrived the 1st thing I seen the damn sprocket had been welded on  I look at the other side and the sifter was welded on too  I do like the power of the 250 seems to be plenty but I like more I guess.
The main reason I want a YZ is cause the extra gear and I hope and maybe be done with the famous case cracking from the kicker hehehe oh well, what do you guys think is the best way to do this.

you can use a 83 YZ motor with the Powervalve, you have to swap the tri-z right cases with the kicker assembly into the YZ....you can put the PV assembly into the Tri-z cases you just have to swap a bearings and punch a plug out if you do a search of it on www.3wheelerworldforums.com it will have a how to on it

what extra gears are you talking about for the YZ's? The YZ 250s were only 5 speeds, and the YZ490s were 4 speeds. As for fitting it up.. be sure to take lots of pics and let us know how you did it. Its something others of us have wanted to try, but would rather someone else try first. ;)

OK over the weekend I went home to MN and picked up my trike and all my boxes of parts, or what I thought were parts.... The **** motor I bought from e-bay had the sprocket welded on and the shifter welded also, Sooooooo I pulled out the grinder and got the welds nocked down and finished it off with the dremmel tool, the threads are f#$@ed as I knew thet would be. The shifter is still in good shape just had to grind the end of it...
So I put my old Z motor on the bench and started checking it out, the case is cracked at the kicker and I noticed the screw hole that holds the stator on is hogged out and will not hold a bolt. I had thought about taking the 2 tranny's and making one but figured that I can tap new threads on to hold the sprocket on since it has cogs it turns on and the bolt just keeps it from falling off, I dont think there is any pressure that is put on it. Iam missing a few peices to finish this and Im still in the market for the 490 motor, I really want to try that out:headbang:
If anyone has any leads on a axle, and a rear shock that would be sweet
The 490 will go in,just need to make room to be able to access the spark plug.;)

Go for the YZ490 motor. Wasn't the 89 YZ490 a 5 speed? I know the early models are 4 speeds but the 88-89. I have 2 6 speeds and alot of 5 speed Z motors. I have 2 running 6's one running 5 and atleast 6 5-speeds trannies. I lucked up on both 6's. And I've never had a case yet to crack on the kicker side. I've seen one all cracked up before. 10 yrs with my 2 Z's never had one to crack yet

Ok guys, I looked around here for a 490 and couldnt find squat, sooo I got the 2 old trans put together and the upper end was fresh on another, ok got the motor all straight for now, the trike is about 65% done and found I'm missing alot more parts than I had thought but the trike looks friggin sweet. I really wish my digital camera wasnt broke, was gonna go get a dispolasble but going to town is an hour trip and I got antsy. Here is a run down of what is done, I'm sure I said before but here it comes again....
The frame has been powder coated white, the motor and trans is flat black, the plastic is was really ****ty so I cleaned it up a bit and rattle canned it yellow with plastic paint so I can get an idea of what I'm looking at. The pipe is stock but painted flat black with some heat wrap on it were it goes through the plastic and kinda gives it a tough look (i like it) with a DG silencer (polished along with all motor mounts). The seat is yellow and black ya see it on ebay all the time :D The swing arm still needs to be powder coated and I'm missing an axle still and both calipers, foot pegs and rear shock, 1 head light and front brake lever, and the heat sheild for the pipe. Thats about the extent of it so far, I'll try to get pics and keep you up on whats going on. Happy wheelin:headbang:

adam Because some dumbass designed it so the kicker gear was supported by the case cover only and not the case.
