Has anyone ever done this?

I was wondering if I could replace the ball bearings in the steering stem in my '85 Big Red with tapered roller bearings. I think it would be possible. I guess all I need to know is if the bearing cups come out, which it looks like they do. Any questions, concerns, comments?

Yes you can replace them. Dennis Kirk carries the replacment bearings. and yes the bearing cups just pop out. why you would want to do this i havent a clue but good luck!

I want to do this because I hate ball bearings with a passion. Also makes reassembly a lot easier. Also I am getting the frame powdercoated so they will need to come out anyway. Thank you for the information. I will check it out right now.

Yeah i know what you mean, when i bought my SX the kid ran it without the bottom bearings for who knows how long. but they were a real pain to get back togater.
