View Full Version : 200X: No rear brakes

My rear brakes were sticking today when I took my machine out for a quick spin. I pulled off the caliper, removed the pads, cleaned everything off and used a C-clamp to push the caliper back in place.

Now I have the oposite problem, I have no rear brakes! When I push down on the pedal, I get nothing. There's no leaks, and the resi has the correct amount of fluid.

I tried cracking the bleader and pumping the pedal, just a trickle came out.

Any ideas? I'm totally stumped.

Figures, I'm going riding Sunday...Opening day in Mass for the state parks.

Id guess the caliper piston is corroded... have you ever had the piston and seal out of the caliper?

I will almost guarentee the problem is the slide pin. If the calipar cannot "float" side to side, it cannot work properly.

Never had the piston out of the caliper. I could take it apart. Hmmm.

ATCnut,
I'm getting no pressure at all at the brake pedal. I can practially pusht he thing down to 65-70 degrees with my hand.

If you have never had the caliper OR master cylinder apart....I would say one or both is corroded. Mine was the same way. Had to clean the master cylinder out. But for almost 20 years old...wasn't that bad.... Had to replace the piston in caliper. It was pitted, wasn't sure if it would leak or stick again.
Had a hard time getting air out after rebuilding both.
hope this helped.,..

Did you take the cap off of the resivour? There has to be a place for the fluid to go when you squeeze the caliper with the C clamp. Sounds more like there is air in it now, I think you need to bleed it good and flush out all the old fluid.

I think that may be the problem. In my rush to fix the situation, I did not loosen the cap to the resi.

Now, how the heck can I bleed a system that has no pressure? Opening the bleeder and pushing down on the pedal does nothing.

I'm stumped guys. I bought a Mity Vac hand powered bleeder today and bled the system a good 8+ times. Nothing. I can't get the brakes to work at all. Pressing on the pedal feels like there's no fluid in the system at all. I took off the caliper, cleaned it, took of the master (but not apart) and cleaned that.

I can't figure out what's wrong.

Its gotta be inside the master. I am afraid that without the lid being removed from the rezzy, you blew out the master seals. I think a rebuild is in order.

If you take off the line from the caliper and hold your thumb and finger over the holes in the line and pump the peddle, can you feel pressure?

My 350x looses its brake pressure sometimes, usually after it sits awhile, I think the small seal that is on the backside of the piston is leeking a little. Only takes a few times bleeding it and it works fine. The front brakes on my 200x didn't want to bleed for nothing, finally I took the caliper off the forks with the line still hooked up and it for some reason started to work.

I think it's the master guys. Nut hit the nail on the head with the fact that I didn't remove the resi cap.

Is there a rebuild kit available or can I just get new seals.

Even without a rear brake, I still had an awesome ride this weekend. I just had to be mindful and do a little extra down shifting.

Does Honda still sell rebuild kits?

I don't know what the big deal is, it's not that hard to find replacements. If you have a motorcycle shop around you that services hondas, they will have the part for you. If you talk to the man in charge, alot of times they will sell you the part for cost. That's what I do for my bike. My trike though has a manual rear brake that I never use. Most of the time I downshift to slow. Usually it is faster and safer.:)

I'm going to take this apart this weekend. The bottom of the master and snap ring are both pretty rusted.

Glenn...I just took my master cylinder apart and cleaned everything....Just take the o-rings and seals out.IF EITHER IS CUT OR TORN ....REPLACE!!
..clean them with HONDA BRAKE PARTS/CONTACT CLEANER ONLY... It will not hurt the o-rings or seal..
Clean the grooves that the oring/seal sets in..Mine was just corroded..Put back together, Like I said..Mine was a BIG PAIN to bleed. The seal KIT isn't cheap..If you already have it,put it in... I done mine on Saturday evening after work...
Hopefully you won't have a big problem with yours..

Bones,
Thanks! I'll give that a shot!

How much is the kit? Do you know what the part number for the kit is?

This turned out to be somewhat simple. The piston was stuck in the master cyl. A little brake fluid and compressed air..."pop!" came right out. Now I just need a new snapring because that ting broke when removing it. The seals look pretty good. I cleaned out some "gunk" from the corkscrew looking thing.

No wonder the brakes took so long to bleed with the Mity-Vac...the piston was stuck in the "up" position.
