85 250SX Exhaust

I just purchased an 85 Model 250SX..It is clean, adult owned and maintained and was used as a farm/hunting ATV. It looks to me to be in excellent stock type condition...the previous owner has taken the material out of the muffler so it is pretty loud and causes a backfire on deceleration..I will also be using it to play a little and ride back and forth to the deer blind..

Would a factory muffler off of Ebay for $25 or so; or a Cobra Steel replacement for about $100 be the smart move..ie is it worth the $$ to go with the Cobra?

Ultimately quiet is what I'm looking for, but if the Cobra is just a little louder for a lot of performance, I would be ok. But if it is a lot louder and little to no noticable performace gains, I'd rather have the factory muffler...

go with the cobra! the xtra $ will be well worth it. the 20 yr. old e-bay muffler might be restricted,rusted,etc. oh! good luck on the hunt.

IMHO, the cobra will be a lot louder for little performace gain. A good factory muffler will be a lot quieter.

Well, if you want quiet dont go with the cobra.

I think they make their "quiet series" exhaust for the SX. never heard one though so I can't speak to the volume, but I assume it's called quiet for a reason. :)

Well, I actually contacted Cobra to ask about a muffler for the 250SX. They informed me that the only muffler they sell for the SX is indeed pretty loud compared to the factory muffler, and that they make no claim to performance increase due to the install of their muffler...So, I called several ATV parts places and found an entire assembly that was pulled off of a running SX with a cracked frame that was being parted out..Hope to get it by the weekend..Thanks for the all input!

I'll be back with more questions later, for example...are there any options for a larger diameter wheel for the front of the SX? There just aren't many front tire options for the 22x11x8 that it comes with...sure would like a 23x7x10 or similar...I will probably just go with the Kenda K284...
