What is the proper way to tighten the cam chain on an 83-85 200x, I know you screww in the bolt beside the base of the cylinder, but i am not sure the propersetting, nor how to tell when it's time for a new tensioner and guide.. also do the center cases have to be split to replace the tensioner?
here you go. if it does not work you need new chain and gears.
can change under left side cover

Hye I am guessing your cam chain is probably stretched :S .. I realized my was resently.. looks like the bottom cam gear was never changed..
Anyone know a good/easy way to get the bottom cam gear off the crank while its still in the case?..
For your question no the case halves do not have to be split to change the tensenor.

So what's the 10 for? Just leave that one alone? I ask because I'm going to attempt this myself on an S motor, my chain is rattling a little.

The bolt in the top is to tap down on the adjusting rod, if the keepers are stuck.

Now.. having access to a partially disasembled tranny from my XR 200.
When you tighten ( clockwise ) you push down on the tensioner putting SLACK in the chain.. when you back out ( counterclockwise ) you TIGHTEN the chain by letting the spring on the tensioner push harder on the arm.
So.. don't get them confused.. by having 14 ft/lbs on the nut.. you are tensioning the spring and allowing proper tension on the chain.
This is why you may have read about removing the10mm bolt and pulling UP on the tensioner to tighten a streched chain !!!!
Hope that helps.
