View Full Version : 250 Kxt Tecate // Ignition!!
Hi,
I've just finish to restore a 250 KXT TECATE 1986, and i've got some problems with the ignition system.
I have remade my stator coil, and it have be OK during 10 Minutes, and then no more ignition.
I have 3 possibility, Stator, CDI, Ignition Coil.
I find a linck on this site to buy a Stator, but Where can I find a CDI and an ignition COIL?
Is someone of you have thoses parts?
Have you some electrical values to control my parts, or perhaps an electrical diagram?
Is this problem known by someone?
I know it's a lot of questions but just a little data can help me....
Thanks for help.

What kind of stator do you have on it now? Ricky Stator sells new ones, I assume you bought one from them? As far as the coil or the cdi goes, I do not know if they are discontinued or not, as I have not tried ordering these parts for mine. Of course they are very pricy to buy as oem parts. If they are discontinued, then you'll have to either get one off ebay or someone on the boards that has some spares etc. I have seen brand new oem cdi's and regulators go for 20 bucks or so here and there, good luck, I imagine 86 t3's over there in france are a very rare commodity indeed.
Thanks for your reply,
In France there is less than 30 t3.

Lulu, You said the system worked for 10 minutes then died. Does the machine run after cooling off? If so, you have a thermally intermittent problem. You can get a can of freeze spray and shoot it on the cdi to test it, i.e., cool it off after dying and trying to re-start. Obviously, You can't use it on the coil, but if you believe it to be the stator, look for a bad solder connection or re-solder all the connections. A thermal cdi problem would be nearly impossible to fix, as they are sealed in epoxy.
back in the 80's and 90's I used to make $100 a day with my soldering iron fixing TV's in-home. Just by re-soldering bad connections. RCA tuners, Mitsubishi and Pioneer Big screens fed Me and My Wife !!
Ahhh those were the days (I'm glad I don't have to do that again!!)
Thank you very much for all thoses value.....it's exactly what I need....I cherch them in France during 1 Year..and nothing...
I post 1 message on this site and I've got the answer in 1 Day...:) :)
Just when I have finished to restore my Tecate, the problem occur when it was HOT..when it was cold it restart and run OK during 10 minutes.
Then, I find that one of the coil of the Stator was bad, I give it to an electrical specialist and he remade it.
I try the ATC, I was OK and more...but 10 Minute later it was stop.
No spark....I regive the coil to the electrical specialist..He said it was ok..I replace all the part on the ATC ..but nothing...
With Yours value I can test all my coils....
Thanks
Sorry I have made an error, my TECATE 250 KXT is a 1987 one.

Chances are, You may find normal readings because they are temperature/power sensitive. In other words, they will "test" OK, because the test meter is applying such a small amount of current for the measurement. Also, is there any possibility of the CDI Box being the fault? Unfortunately, sometimes the "Shot Gun" method is the only way to fix it.
Shotgun method = Replacing Parts one by one until ALL the parts have been replaced.
Also, don't forget the "I'll do it Myself Method"
Take the stator coil apart, making very detailed drawings of every wire wrap, and re-wrapping it yourself. It's just wire, solder and tape!
OK, I will try that the next Week end.
Are your value ok for my 1987 Tecate, because a the top of the message I said it was a 1986 one, but i had make an error.
you can see picture of it one the no-tech forum. "restore KXT 250"
do you Know where I can found the TECATE 250 KXT 1987 servic manuel?
I found on EBAY a CDI from a KXF 250, The man witch sell it said me that it's ok for a KXT, but on is CDI there are : 3 seperate wires and 1 two prong plug.
On the KXT CDI I've got 6 Wires geting out??? DO you thinks it's ok???
Thanks for all

If I remeber right, a 1986 KX250 Dirtbike ignition will work also.
OK,
I have made some reading test:
Ignition primary and secondary Coil are OK.
Stator ligthing coil is OK.
But I don't find a reading ok / 20 tested on the CDI.
So, my CDI is Breack. But I thinck it's occure because my ignition stator coil give too much Voltage. I thinck the électrical spécialist which remade my ignition stator coil have made an error. I have to read them, but I haven't any value.
Is someone can give me the "ohm" at the out of the stator between:
W/R and BL=?
BL and BK=?
Thanks for help.

The '86 and '87 values should be the same. I'm pretty sure the CDI off of a KXF will not work. They usually sell for around $50 on ebay.
To finish all the test of my ignition system, I need 2 values:
At the out of the stator I need the resistance (OHM) between those differents Wires:
White/Red and Blue=?
Blue and Black=?
In France I can't found thoses values, and without them I can not progress.
Thanks.;) ;) ;)
