picked up a 82 250r that is complete and in good condition, but needed a top end. Now that I have the top end off, I will also need to rebuild the crank. What parts other than a rod kit, gasket kit, and top end kit should I be figuring on replacing?
Are there other parts inside the cases that I will likely need replacing?
What kind of costs you figure I will have involved? I plan to split the cases myself and have the crank rebuilt by a local shop.

HI!! WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!
Since your splitting look at the bearings for tranny as well. Depends of the tolerences on the crank itself, if any part of it went out of round then the whole bubby needs to be fixed, but if you just need bearings it wont be too bad. I think bearings run between 50 -60 depending for both. They have to be pressed on, and the shop should be able to handle that within a half an hour. Anymore then they need to practice!. Especially since your splitting, and just basically handing them a crank. Anything that could wear should be checked, nothing worse then splitting only to split a couple months later or sooner.
If you do find bearings need to be replaced, out sorce those. Cuts dollars off the prices. I am not sure what bearings are in this particular case without looking, but the needle bearings seem to be harder to achieve, while the ball bearings you should be able to get non oem. Your bearing, belt, industrial supply should be able to match the bearings. Same thing on the seals. Sometimes you can match needles bearings, sometimes you cannot. Just take them in and have them check.

Thanks for the info. I am just trying to weigh the prices prior to starting.
What I thought was a cheap easy fix (top end) might get kind of expensive for something that was going to be a second bike for playing on once in awhile. My main machine is a crf450.
If it looks too expensive I will probably part it out or sell it as a basket case.
The rest of the bike is actually pretty good shape and it is all there.

I just rebuilt a 200x engine, new valve cut and seated, (you dont have to worry about that lol) reringed, and new bearings and timing sprockets. I handed them my cylinder, piston, head, and crank. They did it for around $250. That was cut and seating, and replacing intake valve, replacing crank bearing and sprocket, putting the rings on my piston, and honing my cylinder. You should be less then that due to no valves. The case bearings I did myself. Gasket kits come cheaper as whole units.
