My two 70s do similar things. This weekend I got one fixed. Carb cleaned, plus clean out the screen behind the petco ck, and filed the points seemed to fix it. I used a wire from a wire wheel to clean out all the small holes in the jets. Removed the pilot, main, and air screw jet to clean them out better.

Mine would start and run with the choke off, but as soon as the throttle went over about 1/2 way it would miss, but if you flipped the choke on it would rev out just fine.

Sounds like it is working like it is supposed to to me. You need the choke when it is cold, and after it is warmed up, it runs fine. What is the problem??
