I have found on this website that the xr200 cams and the xl185s cams are a little "hotter" than the stock 200x cam. So I ordered the xl185s cam from hondaline for 51.00 dollars plus 8 for shiping.:headbang: Then I stumbled across this:
http://www-staff.lboro.ac.uk/~elvpc/bikes.html?http://www-staff.lboro.ac.uk/~elvpc/papers/XR200.html
In his chart the numbers for the lobe height are lower than the stock ones in my service manual. What gives? Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks.

You need to talk with someone over at atvconnection, that goes by the name knowseverything or something to that effect. From what I understand but dont quote me on this the cam you want is no longer available, and the cam you possibly bought, is the replacement????? Again Not sure On this one, Haywood may jump in here as well.

I found that people use the xr200 and xl185s cams to give their 185/200 motors a little more pep.:D I found the honda part numbers by doing a search on cams in this forum. So I got on Service Honda and ordered the xl185s cam for an 1980 dirtbike because Knowsalot said that they were the better of the two in a different post. Then I found the link and was wondering why the lobe height is shorter that the stock 200x. I posted this question on 3ww.com and was told that the duration and the center angles are more important.

The camshaft that is actually more preferred than the XR200/XR200R cams is the one used in the 1979-1981 XL185S bikes.

I can't find who first posted this, but I saved it to my computer for future usage. I am sorry to whoever posted it for not giving them proper recognition.:hail: I found it either here, atvconnection.com, or 3ww.com. The prices listed are actually a little cheaper from Service Honda :D Anyways here it is:
There have been alot of questions surrounding the camshafts used on these models lately.
I thought going over all 3 variants of these OEM camshafts in one post would be helpful to many and answer some of those questions.
Camshaft Part# 14101-965-000------MSRP---$80.47------Status: Still available from your Honda dealer as of 12/09/04
This camshaft is used in ALL of the ATC 185/200 series engines except for the '86-'87 200X engine.
And yes, the '83-'85 200X cam IS the same as all the other ATC 200 models.

1984 TRX200
Camshaft Part# 14101-446-000------MSRP---$78.42------Status: Still available from your Honda dealer as of 12/09/04
This camshaft is used in ALL XR versions of the 185 and 200 dirtbikes up to the 2002 model year except the '84-'85XR200R.
1979 XR 185
1980-1984 XR 200
1981-1983 & 1985-2002 XR 200R
Camshaft Part# 14101-437-000-----MSRP---$70.13------Status: Discontinued at one point but currently available in limited Qty as of 12/04
This camshaft is used exclusively in the dual sport bikes and has a higher lift and duration than the XR version camshafts.
1979-1984 XL 125S
1979-1983 XL 185S
1983-1984 XL 200R
These are the ONLY cams used by Honda on any given 185 or 200 series engine of this engine design.
Valve springs are identical on all of the above engines and all 3 camshafts will directly swap with any other engine listed above.
Most, but not all, camshafts have the model prefix stamped on the camshaft. For example, a camshaft from a 1982 ATC 185S might have the numbers...965...stamped into it. Look at the part number for the camshafts above and you will know what cam to look for when visiting the salvage yard.
Granted....neither the XR or XL camshafts are racing camshafts, but they do offer more than the stock cam and at a much more affordable price......and do not require heavy duty valve springs.

Have you tried the xl cam out yet? How is it? Jen are you happy over the xr cam? I'm looking at buying a new one this week and would like some input. Thanx

Yes I have put it in. This past Thursday I put a new piston/ring set and the xl185 camshaft in. I haven't had it up to top speed yet but it seems to have made it respond quicker. I noticed it felt like it was ready to "take off" easier.:D All in all I really think it was worth the 60 bucks.:headbang: That's just my 2 cents.;)

Go to http://www.servicehonda.com/parts.html and click on Hondaline at the top of the page. It pops a window up where you can put part #'s.

Since you were wondering who originally posted this, it was KNOWSALOT from the atvconnection forums. Patrick is very smart when it comes to the 185/200 series atcs.....I've bugged him on more than one occasion....I knew this cuz I also have this saved on my comuter in the 'KNOWSALOT FILE' There are some things a guys just gotta save. lol
