View Full Version : Help! Which clutch for my TRI-Z?

I just bought an '86 Tri-z 250. It has a 5 speed trans. I bought it without riding it first, because it had no chain. Big mistake! I put a chain on it today and....it has no clutch!! When I have the clutch engaged and go to put it in gear it stalls(acts like the clutch isn't engaged at all). The clutch cable is adjusted as far out as possible. I then drained the crankcase oil and it was gray. Am I correct in assuming that it needs a clutch? What brand of clutch do you guys recommend? Where can I get one? I would like a heavy duty clutch, because I plan on doing some more engine modifications in the future. Thanks for any help!

Well its not about your clutch, but you bought a 85 1/2 tri-z, the 86 tri-z's had a 6 speed in em.

I would say if your oil is Gray then you have more Problems than the Clutch...Have you checked your Coolant?????
Also,,,,the post above is correct....If you have a 5sp then you were Jipped yet again....
I just put a Barnett Clutch in mine and it Worked Great....

Sound's like the water pump seal went out and water got in the oil...the plates will rust and stick to the fiber's "especially if it sat for awile"... i use Barnett Spring's and OEM Fiber's.. i don't like the Kevlar in the Barnett Fiber's... Tend's to "EAT" Metal abit

Well I'm glad that I posted my problem on here! I learned a few things about this bike already. The guy that I bought it from said it was an '86. I thought that the '86's were all 6 speeds, but I thought maybe someone had slipped an '85 motor in it. But it's actually an 85 1/2,huh? At least now I know what I have. I really didn't care if it was a five or six speed to be honest. I've heard that the 5 speeds hold up better. Is that true?
It sounds like I've got some other issues as well. It sounds like I've got a bad water pump seal and it's leaking coolant into the crankcase, huh? Great! Well,at least I didn't just run it and blow it up I guess! The bike did set for a while,so the plates could very well have rusted to the fibers, especially with it having coolant in the crankcase. I guess I'll order some parts for this thing and get it up and running. I guess I'll need a set of steels and fibers, springs, water pump seal and gasket. Is that all I should need? Any good places to get the parts that I need?
Overall the bike is in pretty good shape, especially for it's age. I paid $450 for this bike. Did I get ripped off?
Thanks for the help guys. I'm new to this bike,so I really appreciate all the advice.

Thanks again for all the help guys. I'm just getting back into ATV's after about 10 years of not having one. It's nice to know that there are people that are willing to help out when you need it. I love this site already!
I'll see if I can get some pictures up of my newly acquired ride. It's not mint, but it's a starting point. I already have the parts ordered to get my bike up and running. Now I have to wait:( .
