looking for a reasonable fix for my shock problem on my 84 kawasaki tecate3 250 the plating on the rear shock is peeling off and tore the seals all i could find is a $500 shaft wich seems to be a little pricey or $800 shock any help or cheaper options would greatly be apreciated.

That's a big issue for a shock to have the center shaft go really. Other than dismantle it, re-plate the shaft and then rebuild the shock the only other thing you can do is replace the whole thing.
If an OEM Tecate shock is real expensive, see what else will fit and go that path.
Someone here must have used a quad shock or something like that on Tecate. It will be a cheaper path than the options you mentioned for sure.

There is a place that welds(if needed) and replates shocks. I don't remeber the name. A friend of mine had it done. I haven't seen him in almost 2 years. I will try to find out. They actually did a good job. We tore the shock down and sent ONLY the shaft. Wasn't too bad of a price either. around $150-190?
Maybe someone else knows also.
Here are a few I found online. NOT the one I was thinking about.
