Howdy gang....

Well, I am soon to be the proud owner of a 1985 Yamaha Tri-Z 250...and I have a few questions:

1. Plastic: I need a rear fender, I can get that okay, but what about the radiator scoops?

2. Engine parts: I am splitting the cases to freshen up the bottom end...there is nothing wrong with it, I just want to go through it before I start riding it...who has what available for it? Clutch discs? Bearings? Pipes?

3. Water pump impeller? I have noticed that some of the Z owners here have had to replace them, is there anything else I need to look for?

4. Fuel pump: Do these go out often? Are they rebuildable?

5. Fuel tank: is there an aftermarket upper tank available, to replace the lower tank?

More later, when I remember....thanks again.

Congrats on the new toy!!!!

1. Scoups are not available....Aussiedunner(sp) has some New Repos for sale.....

2. Everything (just about) is still available at Yamaha for the engine....Be prepared to pay through the nose...

3. I havent had any problems with mine.....I suspect they go bad when they get too hot...Plastic Melts

4. I havent had one go out on me yet...There is a Rebuild Kit available....

5. Nothing aftermarket for the Fuel tank....Youll have to build one...Some people use the 60 tanks under the Air Box Cover....

Good luck and post some Pics....

www.denniskirk.com is probably your best bet for clutchtes and axle bearings among other things.

When my impeller went out it was cause the actual impeller thing with the fins on it stripped out on the shaft. It appears that inside the plastic impeller is a metal insert, and on the end of the pump shaft where the impeller is suppose to mount is a roughed up place so the impeller would get grip and not turn, I think there is a word for it but can't remember. The steel insert inside the impeller is what appears to have failed. I think the new impeller was like $28 from the dealer and if your going to do that you might as well do the seal which was around $20.

on the tri-z water pump.here is a mod a very savvy guy taught me. drill a small hole thru the water pump plastic impeller. drill straight down into the steel shaft where the plstic fits the shaft after the hole is all the way thru.use a small cotter pin to go thru the new hole just like a rear axle hub nut. secure the cotter pin and you will not have to worry about the impellar coming off the water pump then. it is a good secure mod.the plastic impellar will stay fixed to the shaft. the mod takes about 10 minutes with a good drill bit once the water pump is out of the bike.:thumbsup:just make sure the cotter pin is smaller than the over all diameter of the impellar fins so the steel pieces do not hang out past the fins on the impellar
