Well, since I made a terrible mistake back in 1995 of selling my 87 250r, and believe me when I say I kick my arse everyday for getting rid of it.$1000.00. I have tracked down an 87 kx 250 engine in fairly good condition, and plan on referbishing an entire 87 250 tecate3. My question, didn't they use the kx250 dirtbike engine for the 87 tecate3 motor, and does anyone see any major problems in accomplishing this mission. thanks

YOU HAD AN 87r? Are you sure it was an 87? I would still be kicking myself!

the motors where similar, but they still had slight differences, the tecate motor produced alot more torque, and the bike motor was higher reving, but im preety sure they bolted on the same.

Yes it was an 87 250r, liquid cooled, 6 speed, it hauled. Of course I didn't realize the gold mine I had, until I tried to track down another one. But even so, I raced a tecate 3, stock, that blew my doors off. So Hopefully with a little boring, and tuning, I can get this kx250 up to par. I read an article in DW a year or so ago that had a refabed tecate3 with the kx250 motor in it. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have the bolt up probs I had when I tried to use a kdx250 motor in a mojavi frame. It was terrible. I got it to work eventualy, but it wasn't as pretty as I had hoped. Any who, thanks for the info.

Didnt the dirt bike engine have a kick starter that kicked towards the back of the bike. Like most dirt bikes. And the t-3 have a starter that kicked forward because of the rear fenders????.

the T3 kicks backwards like a dirtbike. The fender on that side has a scallop to allow clearance for your foot (if you have baby feet anyway, my size 12 gets hung up every time).

I'm alsmost positive the motors are, for all practical purposes, identical. However if you look at the front page link to my personal pics there are some detailed shots of the t3 motor in my '86 there somewhere that may be helpful.

I think he is talking about the TRX250R not the ATC250R.

I doubt the 87 R even existed for the ATC lineup.

there was such thing as a '87 250r, the 3wheeler was only white, and avaible in canada, for a short period of time. the 87's where blue/white, and red

you show me pics of one on the dealership floor, or with someone riding one...and ill beleive it.

...and no the honda ads dont porve anything ;0)

...This is what i say: there was NO R, no 350X.

There was a Big Red (i believe my brother had one alst february)...a 200x...a 125m....a 250sx...and thats the extent on the 87 ATC's.

this no longer has anything to do with tech. to debate the existence of '87 ATCs take it to the lounge. to argue about it go to the fight club. :nono:
