My buddy is thinking about getting an ESR pipe for his 86 atc250r. It is all stock except for a cr head gasket. Has anyone used this pipe, or maybe recomend another pipe?

you have to trim the stock engine skid plate a bit(if you aren't using spacer plate motor), and the silencer mounts don't line up correct, I used a pipe hanger for the top bolt and a head stay for the other brackets. The holes are about 7/8 off from center. Its a good pipe, but it deosn't fit the best, my new paul turner pipe the silencer didn't fit the best either. this happened on 3 different frames, so its not the frame, but it might have something to do with using spacer plate motor.

thats odd considering the 86 motors typically do not use the spacer plate. the spacer plate set up is for the 87-89 motors to imitate the 86 motor

I know Dirtsquirt has a ESR pipe on his and think hes happy with it:shrug: I have a LRD on mine and think its a whole lot better then the FMF I took off. Aftermarket pipes never seem to fit right on. I had to 'adjust' mine to get it right also;)

well the pipe arrived and instalation was not too bad. we did trim the skid plate a little, and the silencer does not use any of the rubber mounts. The silence mounts perfect when you solid mount it. now we will see how it runs.

find a way to rubber mount the silencer. Two stroke exhaust need to be rubber mounted for vibration. If they are not, sonic waves can vibrate back into the combustion chamber and cause seizier

try this,

or this,

or this,

or this,

or this,
or just do a search on two stroke exhaust theory. you'll find about 20,000 pages

Well that was good reading but never anywhere in any of those articles was seizure due to solid mounting mentioned. Yamaha built tons of enduros better known as the DT series that had 2 springs and one bolt hardmount to the frame..
No wonder mine seized up, I thought it was cause the premix pump failed, NAW it musta been sonic soundwaves eroding my piston..... Seems someone is talking out their ---> :booty:
Thanks for the pipe construction links though, it was interesting....

once again my words are twisted and i'm insulted
where did i say it would erode the piston?
why are all two stroke exhaust rubber mounted now?
why even have the springs?
feel the pressure at the end of your exhaust pipe. what do you think would happend if it went back into the cylinder at the wrong time?
you did say sonic what right? did not all those pages mention sonic waves and or pressure. did you read all 20,000 plus pages?
did i say it definatly would. or did i say it COULD?

*why are all two stroke exhaust rubber mounted now?*
So you don't crack the pipe. Thin steel and high frequency vibrations don't go well together.
*why even have the springs?*
See above.

Proper expansion chamber design disallows this.

this would be true except one thing...stock two stroke exhuast are dual walled to keep them quite enough to pass the governments strict sound regulations. they are in fact thicker then most four stroke exhuast.
