I bought a 83 185s awhile back for $50, the end of the cam was busted off. so i got a cam for it and put it in and tightened the head back down. the motor turned over fine and then when i put the cdi unit back on and tightened it the motor turns real hard. does anyone have an idea what it could be?

When you say it turned over fine. Do you mean before you put the timing chain sprocket on the cam. it turned over fine?. Or did you have the sprocket and chain on and it turned over fine. Then when you put the cdi unit back it it bound up?. The reason i am asking is because i have never seen a cam snap off. Something had to quit wanting to turn very quickly to snap that cam.

The timing chain was on and it turned fine but as soon as the cdi unit was on and tightened you could turn it but it turned way harder than it should! I also thought about what you said and something had to have happened to snap that off. I really wasn't worried about it at first because i had a motor that ran to put in the trike but now i just have this motor laying around so i thought about trying to get it running!

If you take the PULSE GENERATOR off and spin it by hand does it turn easy?. If it dose. Then i would guess that maybe the head is warped and when you tighten down the PULSE GENERATOR it pulls the cam to one side or the other. And binds up the cam. Causing it to stress and snap. Maybe keep your eyes open for a $20.00 head on ebay.
