I have a spare cam for an ATC200 that I would like to make into a "lumpy" cam.
I have seen it done with various 4 strokes.Does anyone have a rough idea how much to add to the cams?..I have a mate whos quite good with a welder.
Would I be better off to add to this cam,or use something off an XR200 or something( if it fits..)
Cheers

Are you saying these sorts of cams cant be welded??I have heard of many people on the internet who have welded on to the cam lobes and then removed material till they get the specs you want(this was for racing lawnmowers)....Mind you, there is alot of fake material on the web these days..
Does anyone know if a xr200 cam will bolt in,or even a whole xr200 topend will "bolt on"?
How about a whole XR motor with a X forward kicker?
Thanks for the help

"welding" on the cam,,,is Hardwelding, very precise and then Machined down to properspecs with the proper tools, its not something you can do in your garage....do i search on the XR stuff theres a Huge thred on it somewhere round here....

I agree. "Don't try this at home" There is more to it than just welding metal on it. You have to regrind down. You have to reharden it after I think.
The xr cam should work. It hasa little more torque than stock. I am not sure of what year of xr to get cam for. I recommend WebCams or Megacycle. I have a Web in mine.

Hey Mate...Web-cam sounds good, but as I am down here, sending it to the US and then getting it sent back may be a bit to much $$ for my budget
Thanks for the replies,I'll try find a wrecked xr200 to steal its motor.

I've welded on a briggs cam before. I used a mic to mimick the exact lobe shape and height of a racing cam. It runs just as good as the boughten cam. You can do it. I used a lathe to ensure the lift height lobe was square to the camshaft. One problem with the atc engines is they use hardened rockers, the briggs uses a coated tappet, which is much stronger. Take your time and make sure the lobe is machined or polished smooth so it doesn't eat your rockers away.
Sometimes its fun to just mess around, its not always necessary to be scientific when you are experimenting. Welding your own cam up may not be a good idea for a trike you are running all day at the dunes, but it sure is fun to see what you can do for nothing.. Where do you think the idea for big cams came from?? Hotrodders were welding the Ford Flathead cams long before one was ground for performance!!

Hey Mate,
Is the lathe part vital??I don't really have access to a lathe so that could be a problem...I do on the other hand have a dremel, could this work??
