View Full Version : My swingarm pivot bolt hell

Well, I got a brand new swingarm to replace the cracked original. I've read about other people's struggles to get their bolts out but I thought " it can't happen to me". Yeah riigghht. Stuck tight. I tried pounding it out, I tried wedging screwdrivers in behind the bolt head on the opposite side.... nothing. Luckily I have the virtue of patience and so far I haven't wrecked anything. Since the old swingarm is scrapmetal anyway, I decided to cut it away from the bolt instead of trying to take the bolt out of the arm. The first side took about a half hour to do and used up about seven heavy duty cut-off wheels in the Dremel tool. Inside was dust and bits of bearings no bigger than 1/8 inch. At this point, I am halfway through the second side and looking at a broken mandrel in the Dremel tool. I think it got so hot that the tiny screw that holds the wheel on sheared off. Since the hardware store doesn't stay open all night (what are they thinking?), I'm done for now. I'll let you know if my patience holds out tomorrow

Time for an update:
Today's casualty list: two screwdrivers destroyed, pivot collar unavoidably destroyed, years of life off my cold chisel, and about a dozen more cutoff discs.
The pivot collar on the right side was OK but the one on the other side was WELDED to the bolt with rust. Just so happens I couldn't get at that side with the Dremel to cut the swingarm completely away from it. I was able to cut a 5/8 inch "window" in the swingarm that I could get at the inards through. Then I had to cut the pivot collar out in 1/4 inch sections. Pivot collars are HARD.
Even with the losses I still consider it a victory because I was able to get the bolt out in one piece without damaging it. Now while I'm waiting for the new pivot collars I have a lot of cleaning and greasing to do.
If I had to do this again and couldn't damage the arm, I would drill the bolt out.
