Howdy,

I got a couple of questions on '81 185s I need help with:

1. Is there a good way to bench test a coil?

2. Does anybody run the stock strainer (screen) that in the gas tank on these models? I need to use that liquid liner on the tank and I want to get rid of the strainer. What do you suggest?

Thanks
Max

As far as the coil goes. You can test them with a multimeter to check for contineuity(spelling?) but there is no good way to load test them or tell if it is going to work when it is warm other then trying it. I could probable find the specs if you want to try the multitester on it. Other wise most bike shops will test a coil for you for around $5.00.

If you get rid of the strainer in the tank then you would want to put a inline gas filter in somewhere before the carb to keep crap from getting into the carb. I have a after market tank on one of mine. With no stainer so i went to the hardware store and picked up a $1.99 lawn mover filter. And it works great.

I didnt realize coils were that cheap... for that price I'll probably buy one.

On the filter, I'll check the local lawnmower/sm engine shop.

Thanks for your help.

Did i miss something here?. I said to test the coil is about $5.00. To get a new one at Honda they list at about $70.00.

Hey the coil should resist more than about 105 110 ohms. thats the min. when i put a new coil in my 200 (same coil) it was about 254 ohms. negative lead on a good ground . positive lead on black and red wire that sticks out of the motor.
