Took my 250r for a short ride tonight, noticed that it was dripping water from the bottom of the motor. Checked it out, and it is coming from the small weep hole in the bottom of the case, behind the water pump. So I got my manual out to see what it takes to change the water pump seal. It says that you have to have some special tools, a bearing puller and a seal driver. Question is, is this true. Any one ever changed it before, and can you do it with regular hand tools?
The bearing you will have to have a puller of some type. the seal can be put in with a socket.

ok, the seals we have in that assembly are:
Mech seal
oil seal
there is one bearing too, on the motor side of the cover.
you don't need any special tools to get any of the items out, just some properly fitting sockets, a flat blade screw driver, and some patience.
1st thing you have to do is drain your coolant and oil (if your oil seal is also leaking) then you disassemble the pump assembly, noting the order the parts came off the motor. peel out the seal that is in the impellar (should be black and white) and install a new one , it should just press in but if it doesn't get out a socket, a small hammer, and a rag (to put the impellar on while you drive the seal). the other 1/2 of the seal is located on the sidecase, just slide this off. Slide on the new piece and line up the slots on the metal stopper with the lines on the seal.
if you need to change the oil seal and bearing here is what you do (in addition to the above mentioned)
remove the sidecover (after draining oil) and find a socket that *just* fits down into the metal sleeve (from the water pump side). insert it and tap out the bearing. once that is out you can simply remove the oil seal with the screwdriver, being extremely careful not to scratch any surfaces. now tap the new seal in with a socket (put it in the dirrection the previous one was facing before). now put the new bearing or the old one back in if it was still good. find a socket that matches the other race.
Assemble as to what your book tells you and your good.
So to answer your question, yes, you can use hand tools :P

(sorry for the long winded reply, didn't know if you did or didn't need the exact used of the hand tools when/where)

Dirtsquirt, thanks for the info. I haven't torn it apart yet, waiting on parts. But yea I was wondering if you could get away with using sockets to drive out the bearing and the seals. Kind of thought you would be able to, just wanted to hear it from someone that had done it before.
200x_Basket Yea I'm the same Rocketman. Sent you an email with my address.
Thanks
