#03 The Case of the Axed ATV
My name is Dnim…Reven Dnim and this is my partner Ekorb Niaga, we are detectives for the ATV crimes division of the devils backbone.
April 18 2002
After taking a couple of days personal time, and dropping off a badly worn set of knobbys at the local tire shop, a informant told us that we should examine the yokel Boofniff more closely, we came to the conclusion that both of us thought he was hiding something when we had questioned him the first time. After driving over huge sharp rocks and going thru ditches deep enough to lose a 750 water buffalo in, We pulled off of his driveway and the terrain got really rough, we finally located him in a shop that was disguised as a dilapidated mobile home, we located the door behind a pile of rusting lawnmowers and knocked on it. The place was a bigger mess than the lower end of a Vespa. While waiting for an answer Ekorb and I again pondered the relationship of all we had found, it seemed, as there must be some connection, if only we could find the rest of the ATV we would have something we could put together, and I think perhaps the identity of The Tinker as well. The bumpkin finally answered the door, I could tell right away he was about as happy to see us as he would have been to find a squirrel in his air cleaner, we managed to charm our way in, once inside I started right in with the import questions, How many ATVs did he own, could he account for all of them, What did he know about 3 wheelers? Relentlessly asking all these questions and many more, upon reflection we probably should have given him time to answer a few, might have cleared up a couple of things. Ekorb was stalking around the shop while I was working on this befuddled quad park idiot. And then it hit me like a June bug at 70mph, the Odys belong to Boofniff, the mini junkyard was his, upon my accusation he broke down and admitted it, I felt as triumphant as if I had jumped a 20 foot wide creek and come down smoothly on the other side, until his next comment had me hauling my atv out of the water. “I own the shed” he said “but the only time I went in there was to pull the engine out of a ss250 that was in there” “Ah ha there was no ss250in there” I said “was so” he said “and I can prove it” He showed us the engine and frame which we took as proof we both agreed he must be innocent since no one who would try to save a ss250 would be heartless enough to dismember a 3 wheeler in such a fashion, yeah he was a real mechanitarian. We pulled the numbers on the ss250 to see if we could match up an owner.
