I have seen aftermarked hardened gear sets for the 250r somewhere. I think FTZ has them. I am sure there are others that have them too. But the price for them I would guess is high.

From what I am finding, the 86 trx had a seperate gear all by her lonesome, then in 87 they changed the gear? If this is indeed correct, then the 86 5th gear is possibly no longer available. If we are to match that ratio, (again correct me if I am wrong), then we have to change the 4 gears around it. I am curious, however if just useing the newer gears really changes it that much. There is a one tooth difference between each 5th gear on atc, trx 86 and the rest of the trx's. HE (my friend) wants the same gearing so that he doesnt have to spend goobles of cash changing out the whole thing. So DaCatt if there is a hardened one out there it may be a better route for him to go?
Thank you for all the links. Please keep em coming, we would very much just like to match the gear. And if we are lucky enough (yeah right  ) just get the single gear.
I gave him the cal-atv link. We are very aware of ebay(who isnt). Ebay is for the desperate. Ill look up FTZ.

I thought 85-87 tranny's were the same, 87 is where a long rod crank was used.

edit: I was wrong 85 and 86 used the same tranny.

yes they changed the rod lenght and piston pin location on the 87-89...
i think they did something to a couple of gears on the 89 ??

I did not know that changed the gearing so much. I know when searching for 250r parts I did run across some hardened gear sets. Not sure on the details of them or where i found them but worth a try to search for them. New parts are better than 20 year old parts.
