My Yamaha 200 el shaft drive just started shifting hard the other day. It is really hard to get into 1st at times and once you get it into 1st and you start shifting through the gears it will shift but you can feel it shift. Let me try and explain. Normal is when you lift up on the shifter and you feel the click and you know it went into gear. But when you lift up the shifter it is like it wont lift no more and you dont feel a click but when you let the shifter drop back down it did in deed go into the next gear.

I tried adjusting the linkage and that had nothing to do with it. I got upset and started jerking the shifter up and down and guess what it started working again but only for a short distance down the road and it was up to the old tricks again.

I think the only way to check into it is to yank the engine and split it to get to the tranny.

Any suggestions? Anyone had a similiar problems?

Thanks for the Input,
Yamaha200el

You can't feel it shift.

Yea it sounds like something has worn out. There are a few things it could be. But either way you are going to have to split the case to check them out.

almost sounds like a de-tent ball to me. my dirtbike did that wen the tranny drain plug loosened up because the detent pin is in it. have fun and good luck.

I would try the clutch adjustment too before I split the case, it's down by the right side, a slot screw with 10 or 12 mm nut..

does your shift lever have up and down play. (more it up and down with your hand you should feel spring pressure, there should be not play ) if you have play you have a prob with the shift shaft or the spring pin. # 2 in the pic is the pin # 7 is the spring that centers your shift so it is ready for the next shift.

Govert, I think the 200E has linkage system that links the shift lever back to the shift spindle. I think you have a diagram of a 225DX/DR setup. Nice to know somebody has the ability to show those schematics though.

the YTM200n and the YTM200ern list three types of shifts.
this pic was found under the 200n, under shift shaft but they listed a type two that looked like Govert's pic, and type three i did not look at.

My 200EL is the same setup as Dad's schematic. Often the two " connecting ball studs" that screw onto the rod linking the shifter to the shift spindle will come loose. All I have to do is to tighten up the nuts that hold them on. Tightens everything up nicely.
