Can anyone help? I have a 85 tri z I just bought that was suppose to have new top and bottom end. After 5 to 6 hours of run time, it started cutting out like it was running out of gas(going about 55 mph), hit the clutch and revved it up , it sounded good, went about 30 yards, started cutting out again. Went to pull over and it died. Pulled spark plug, and the electrode is smashed against the plug! I don't want to put alot in it. Does this sound like anything you might have had? I have been told a bad crank to a busted piston. Any help would be appriciated.

you need to at least pull the head at this point before going any further. let us know what you find and post pics if you can. good luck!

I would still pull the head like 250SX said, and check to see if that was the right plug that was supposed to be in it.

Yep deffinately check the plug. There is no way the piston should hit the plug unless something let go in the motor and came between the piston and the plug flatening it down. Or some one put the wrong plug in it to begin with. Go to your local auto parts store and have them look up the plug for it to make sure it was the right one for it. I have seen people in a pinch before put any old plug they had laying around in just to get something running. So maybe all you need is the right plug in there if the piston hasnt gotten damaged.

If you get lucky enough to have a spark plug that is too long you will have been the luckiest guy I've known, the plug should be either b8ev or b8es, otherwise you have a crank going bad or a piston coming apart either way someone will be splitting the cases.

If it is indeed the plug, then I would at the least inspect the piston. I've had a longer plug in go-kart engine and it cracked the piston and the con rod went with it. so I'd inspect everything possible before riding it again.:thmbsdwn:

Well, I still haven't heard back from the condition of my tri z. But I ran up on a great deal on a 400ex that had only had about 5 tanks of gas ran through it. I got it at a scream 'em bargain ,(I hope) . $2200.00, so I may put the tri z out to pasture. I live in South Mississippi if any one is interested in it.
