I keep getting water in my transmission, i think its leaking through the waterpump into the trans... sound likely?????

doesn't seem like it'd be that hard of a fix to put a new seal into the waterpump shaft.

Not sure what, or where it could be coming from. You have a manual to get a better idea what is in there?

Go here and grab one, if you don't have one already:

(thanks to Dammit, I believe)

Is this the Z that was just rebuilt? Or did it only have the upper-end worked on?

Also, (don't know if this has anything to do with it really) but I have heard those stock impellers inside there are junk. Yamahondaman makes those billet ones to replace them.

ive taken the housing off and the impellers are perfect, someone had told me before that the water pump shaft seal could leak into the trans case, which i think is whats happening. because the trike runs awesome, but its always low on water and it has started to spit out milky oil from the trans...

just the top end was rebuilt.

im thinking putting a new seal where the water pump is should be easy.

Putting the new one in is easy. Removing the old one might be a chore though. I just had to remove mine from my YZ, and reinstalled it. It was a PITA to get out, but figured it was because it was old. Well, my stupid self put the seal in backwards and even the new one was a pain to get out. Good luck, overally it's an easy swap once you get the old one out. That's your problem by the way. My YZ's tranny was full of pink milky fluid and now I've replaced the seal and only clean oil comes out.

awesome, to get the pump out, did you just wiggle and wiggle and pull and do that until it came out?

did you have to take the entire side case off?

Yes, you have to pull the clutch cover. There's a "E" clip that has to be removed from the end of the impeller shaft. Once that's removed, pull the flat washer and plastic sprocket off the shaft, then there's a pin that goes through the shaft to hold it in place. Remove that and the big flat washer and the impeller should slide right out through the seal. The of course, repeat in reverse when you install. The seal should say "water pump side" on it so you know which way to put it back in. Good luck, total time should be an hour at the most.

Edit: when removing the "E" clip, make sure to put your hanbd around it or something bcuz that little clip will take off across the garage and you'll never find it.

And....... I had to use a little screw driver and a pocket knife to dig out my seal once the impellar was out of there.

isn't the clutch on the opposite side?

nope, the stator is. Clutch and waterpump are all on the same side.

And when you pull the clutch cover, you have to pull all the bolts out of the kickstarter part too and remove the kicker shaft. There's another clutch cover bolt back in there behind the kicker cover and if you don't remove it, the clutch cover won't come off.

aren't there some gaskets you are going to need? i mean at least the clutch cover gasket...but I know I'm getting ready to do mine on my trx and I needed 2 waterpump gaskets for the project....wasn't somethin i just had laying around.

There's a waterpump gasket, a clutch cover gasket, and a gasket for the kicker assembly on the clutch cover, but that's it. I would replace all of them. Maybe take a look at the clutch. I've had 3 Tri-Z's or YZ's where one of the ears of the basket was broken off. Doesn't hurt to check all that stuff while you're in there so you don't have to go back later and replace the gaskets again.

hi guys, ive just finished. thanks for the help

the gaskets looked ok, i put some rtv silicone on them.

everything looked fine and to tell you the truth the seal looked fine too, although im sure it was leaking, there is nowhere else for water to get in the trans.
