I just have a question, We have a 1985 ATC250SX thats pivot bolt bearings have gone/going out. I was just curious if anybody on here has done them and if you have any tips. This is the first time anything besides oil changes has been done too this bike, and my dad baught it brand new off the showroom floor in 85

I've done them, not a hard thing but tricky. I also drilled the frame tube to accept a grease fitting so they'd never wear out again.
You'll need a service manual and a bolt with a 17mm head to get out the adjuster bolt. Use a large blunt punch to loosen the locknut, torque it to the spec in the manual.
If there shot, you better check out the driveshaft and all the differential bearings and seals, I'm willing to bet they are all in need of repair. 85's let in Allot of water...

I wish I still had all the pics of when I replaced mine. Likes trikes is correct. chances are the other bearings are on the verge of going so since most of it will be apart now is the time to replace them.
Found some!
Pics of what was left of my swinger bearings. I just cut the old race out with a dremel. (A good bearing puller will work as well.
The one other pic is the new backing plates I installed (these go in before the bearing and race.
I'll see if I can find some more pics to post with a little explanation for each. :)
OH.. you wont need zerks in there if you install those backing plates. just block off those two holes in the cross tube so no water gets in. Then pack the bearings with a good marine grease.

These are some useful tools to have. I think you'll need a 17 or 19mm allen wrench to get that one do hicky out. (loosen the set nut first with a hammer and punch)... take that dohicky out. Loosen the rubber boot and slide the drive shaft back.. and the swinger will come off on an angle.
Oh,, you gotta take the top shock bolt out too!

more helpful pics
Once the boot is loosend you should be able to get a small pry bar in there to slide it back.
I'm not sure why honda put these two holes here. I plugged mine with jb weld. I didn't want no water or dirt getting in there.
The third pic is the little do hicky I mentioned above.

One other thing to watch out for. Make sure that little "knob" on the swinger where the bearing will ride on is not worn.
All in all it ain't a bad job. Took me a half a day once I had all the parts. (woulda been alot quicker if it weren't for my many beer breaks!)

Yup. I read the manual and got all confused. So don't go orderering no special tools and whatnot. The dremel with the cut off discs worked better for me that the puller. Just try not to butcher it up too bad. you can also weld a 17mm nut and bolt,, then use a socket to remove that lilttle dohicky. :lala:
The rear bearings and the axle gave me the most problems. I posted some questions here:

Here's a homemade puller I had made (cheap)

If memory serves me correctly. It wasnt even necessary to remove the axle to take the whole swinger assembly off. Just had to disconnect the shock and the brakelines.
