I just had a friend who rebuilt my carb. for me and I returned home to put it together. I put it back together and it will not start. This trike has been sitting for about 7 years, but it will fire and gas is getting to the carb. I have changed the oil and have put a little oil down the valve cover. Does anyone have any ideas on why it will not start. Thanks for your time and help.

are you getting gas to the floot bowl. if so try chocking it manualy
( hand over inlet to carb) i don't know your frend experiance in carb cleaning and rebuilding there may still be jamups in the carb.

just open the screw on the bottom of the float bowl. if nothing comes out you may need to take it apart again. its real simple just to check stuff.

When you say you put oil down the valve cover. Do you mean you pulled the valve cover and oiled the camshaft?. Or do you mean you put oil down the sparkplug hole?. If so what does your plug look like?. Is it all wet and covered in oil?. Is it the right plug for the machine?.Have you tried a clean new plug?. Have you tried a few drops of gas down the spark plug hole to see if it would start?.

yeah sparkplugs do that to me alot, or the boot with the resistor dies, it took me about six hours to figure that one out on my 200:doh:

I did pour oil down the valve cover and a little gas down the spark plug and nothing. My friend told me that it should be ready, and I did make sure the the switch was on the run position!!

If you take the plug out and just let it rest against the cylinder and pull it over. Do you have good spark?.
I bet the decompression release is hooked up and not working if he gets spark.

I have changed the spark plug and it is firing. It was firing before I changed the plug.

Do you have the air hose disconnected just to make sure the air filter isnt plugged.
It might just be really flooded have you tried holding the throttle wide open and yanking and yanking on it to see if it will fire up.
Is the plug all wet with gas when you pull it out?.

Its time for the drag start. Get something to pull you on the end of 20 feet of rope. Get the trike turning over in third gear and go a mile or two. After it fires up it will start with the pull start.

All things must be done with a little bit of sanity. Looks like enough work has been done to verify that there is not a major problem like gas running out of the carb. I stand by my recommendation of a drag start. I have drag started many trikes over the years.

I agree, use a little judgement and you should be ok pulling the ATC. What's good about pulling the ATC is that even though it isn't running it will bring the engine up to operating temperature through heat of compression. This takes care of things like faulty chokes and stuff (at least as far as troubleshooting is concerned). It's good to get things moving again, the piston rings and valves will reseat a little just by dragging it a mile or so. Once you get it started and verify that ignition and valve timing, compression and things like that are ok you can see if it'll start normally. If not then you should figure out why instead of always dragging it down the road. Hopefully you'll get it running!!
ohh, and 84 200 S&M ..... Bayous are quads, bursting into flames is par for the course.

pull something without a clutch(manual clutch that is) isnt a good idea,it puts alot of strain on the gearbox, if the trike is in decent working order it should start after some pulling, try some starting fluid right in the plug hole(that does it alot of times)

if you were worried about damaging it in that reason wich ive never heard of you can click it into the gear you wanna start it in and hold it there like hold it up or hold it down (the shifter) and the clutch will disengace then once your moving just let go and the clutch engages and you should be off to hopefully a good start.
