I picked up a 84 250R from a neighbor down the street for a little less than a song and now I need to get her back into a ridable condition.
it has sat in his driveway for at least a year, the motor was blown up and the front of the piston is chipped off at the top. the can has heavy scarring from the piston debris draging along the cylinder wall. so that is first priority
It looks like there is some type o-ring or seal is hanging out of the right side of the rear end and the rear fenders are almost gone.

I am sure I will be asking alot of questions so please bear with me.
any advice and suggestions of what to look for or avoid would be greatly appreciated.

oh I should mention that I had a 250R same year when I was a teenager and that machine was thourghly thrashed on a daily basis and rebuilt (motor) twice before I ended up selling it, I am so happy to be a 3 wheeler owner again, I cant wait for my first ride on my new toy!!

Congrats on bringing back a childhood passion!

One word, Ebay, and there's plenty of folks that would be happy to offer suggestions and the occasional necessary parts. Are the cylinder and head in good enough shape to save?

I believe they are salvageable.
I am going to take it in and have it bored out and see what is left on the inside I may have to have it sleeved, but we will see.

Don't let just anyone bore your cylinder. I have 3 trikes and 3 FL350s and I send all of my barrels to Ed at EEE. A good rebuild starts with a good bore.

I just recently bought an 83. It was in really good shape when I bought it but I hope to make it even better in the next few months. My best advice would be to get a good shop manual and do the little stuff yourself and save your money for the hard to find parts. Parts for the 83-84 seem to be a lot harder to find than the 85-86 at least hear in Missouri.

Good Luck
