You have to tear the tranny down to change it. Why was it welded on because the sprocket spun on the shaft?. Or did it just not have the retainer to hold the sprocket on. Od did the bolts break off in the shaft?.

People who weld -anything- on an engine belong in garbage dumps --DoNT do that!

Hummm i see. And i agree i wouldnt weld anything if i dont have to on a engine. Could you drill a hole through the shaft and put a roll pin through it. Or even a small bolt. Just so it would be easier for you or who ever might own it later to get it back apart again.

Good luck i am sure you can figure out some way to attach it. They dont have much side to side pressure. So it dosnt take to much to keep the sprocket on there.

Yeah, I agree, if you're welding something on that wasn't welded originally then you're probably doing something you shouldn't be. If the part is already wrecked then you've got nothing to lose by making it work with a bolt or roll pin or whatever, but be neat about it! That's my opinion, but it's your trike, do whatever you please.

Why wouldn't you do the right thing and replace the shaft? Welding the shaft would cause carbon embrittlement because of the relatively high carbon content that will most likely be present in the shaft alloy. A brittle shaft would be prone to failure with potentially catastrophic damage to your engine cases. Wouldn't a shaft replacement now be cheaper than finding new cases for your motor if it lets go? Besides that, if someone was lame enough to weld a sprocket onto your shaft, I would be concerned about the condition of the rest of the motor. Opening the cases to replace the shaft would give a great opportunity to examine and repair anything else in the motor that needs attention. I'm sure that the output shaft seal is leaking from the heat produced by the weld. Good luck with your decision but I know what I would be doing if I found such poor quality work on my ATC.

i would like to tear it down to put a new shaft but i dont know enuff about motors to try to do a job like that and if were to hire someone to do it for me it would cost more than the bike cost so if somene can post pics from the repair book on how to do this i would give it a try if not i will just weld it

I wrote the last post prior to your response. What part of Canada are you in? I live in the Barrie Ont. area. I have the manual for your machine. I just completed a full rebuild of my motor and found the manual to give most of the information that you need. There are a few small errors and omissions but the same can be said of Hondas own microfilms. If you are close to me, we may be able to arrange a transfer of information, or perhaps some assistance. Post again and perhaps we could find a way to swap e-mail addresses without giving them to the world. I will probably have to register to do that.
