Im about to get a summer job for one purpose and that is to save for a new trike. Im plannign to spend around 1200.00. I was looking on ebay and around here and i see mostly 250r's. I like the look of the r but i dont know if i can keep alot of money to pour into it. I really need something reliable that wont need much money. The 350x also looks nice but i dont know if it is reliable or not ive heard some things bout the heads or something and the frame cracking. So what should i do. I will mostly ride trails and creeks i like to ride fast but not anything major. Im around 6 ' 3 or so and 270. In case that is a factor. Im going to be graduating from a 200s. Like i say itll take all summer to save for this and i dont want anything that i will ride for a week and it break down and i have no money to put into it when im in school.

For reliability and because of your size. I would recommend the 350x. Because it is a 4-stroke instead of a 2-stroke like the 250r. It should require less maintainance. I am not saying the 250r isnt reliable. But because they are a 2-stroke and run higher compression they will wear out rings faster. And can be a bit tempermental like any 2-stroke. And because of your size i think the extra torque and 100cc`s of the 350x would work better at getting you up big hill`s. And being`s how you have a 200s allready. The 350x wouldnt be that much different for you to work on then your 200s just bigger. So i dont mean to put down the 250r by any mean`s. They are wonderfull full blown racing trike`s. But as with any high proformance machine. They can require lot`s of maintainance to keep them in top running form. I just think a good running 350x is going to run longer with out needing any maintainance.

I agree with Fuzzy, and would also like to add that the type of riding you do can be a factor as well. If you're a wide-open kinda guy, and ride places where you're going all out a lot, the two-stroke is well suited to that type of riding. But if you ride slow a lot (like I do with my family, trails, etc.) then the low-end and mid-range torque of the four stroke is better suited to that type of riding. I've had four 350x's in the last year, (all gone now except my keeper) and had NO head problems on any of them, and only one cracked frame (which was on my first one that I bought three years ago). The 85 350's are more prone to the frame crack I've heard, and always in about the same spot- just above the left foot peg, more or less. If you like to have a bike that you just gas and ride, the four stroke is unbeatable. Virtually no maintenance.
Enjoy!

Go with the 350x, any 2 stroke is a pain in the a$$. Nothing against the 250r cause it is an atc, but I prefer to ride more than I work on my Atc. My Atc is ever so reliable and I can ride the hell out of it and it comes back for more. Just make sure you change your oil and filter after about every 30 hours of riding. That keeps them nice and fresh. With four strokes its change the oil and put gas in it. 2 strokes are always needing constant attention so if you like to ride more than fiddle with spark plugs and tuning your carb go with the 350x. By the way my frames not cracked and my head is just fine.

4 strokes truck, 2 strokes suck! :headbang:
y'all gettin' tired of hearing me say that yet? :chuckle: :lmao: :booty:
seriously I'd go with the 350x. there are no problems with the '86 model. I've heard of some '85s having cracks, but they're not too hard to fix even if it does.

BOY YOU FOURSTROKE GUYS JUMPED RIGHT ON THIS ONE!!!!!!!! :salute: :salute: I'M A TWOSTROKE GUY AND I SAY BUY A 350X IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE GET A FOURSTROKER!!!!! TWOSTROKE GUYS KNOW !!!!!! TO GO FASTER!!!! YOU BUY A TWOSTROKER BUT LIKE THEY SAY BE PREPARED TO WORK ON IT A LITTLE TOOOOO,,,,,
:iluvu: :iluvu: :iluvu: TWOSTROKES
:thmbsdwn: :thmbsdwn: :thmbsdwn: FOURSTROKES
LETS ALL DO THE HAPPY DANCE!!!!:lala: :lala: :lala: :lala: :lala::lala: :lala:
I don't know why you guys relate 2-strokes with unreliablility or "always needing constant attention".
I've ridden my 250r hard for a year and a half, with the same rings... I've never even had the head off yet. Never did anything other than clean the carb once and change the oil every month.
Big E, by the description of what your looking for, I would say a 350x would suit you better than a 250r. 250r's like to be wound out.

alright, im a 2stroke guy myself, that owns a fourstrok:( if i were you id buy the 2 stroke becuase i know that a 2 stroke will go anywhere a fourstroke will, just wont pull as much, sure a fourstroke is more reliable, but the pure acceleration that a 2stroker has, well, nothing can beat it in my mind.:lala: :lala: :lala: :lala: :lala: :lala:

Dan since you don't like two strokes I'll be down to save that TECATE from you!!
I personally would go with the a nice 3 stroke maybe a 237or 238 whatever it takes. Seriously I don't see where a two stroke is anymore work than a four stroke, but I guess I could be wrong, once the carb and jetting is set it should be fine until you make some kind of drastic change and the 15-20 minutes after a ride to check them over is what you should spend on any bike if your going to take care of it. I guess you could count the topend jobs every 1-15 years for a two stroke but that takes about 3-4 hrs so I wouldn't even count that I've seen 4-stroke guys change jets more often than I do in a 2-stroke, at any rate I believe that a 350x would be a good choice and personally I ride them all brand names and 2,3, or 4 stroke they will all work fine if you take the time to learn the machine you ride inside and out!!!

Geeez I have a four stroke and I love it, I ride trails and rivers and stuff on my ranch. I am a 5'8 210lbs 16 year old and my YTM 225DX is perfect, but I want a two stroke! there much more fun in terms of going fast. A 2 stroke needs just as much attention as a four stroke, you should always take care of your trike and service it as much as it needs it. It all depend on the shape of the trike when you get it, a 350X will probably be in better shape because they are tough and hard to **** up, but a good 2stroke will last for a good while too

i will probaly go with the 350x. How hard is it to do a top end job on a 2 stroke? whats involved. I would buy it here but i was lookign in the paper and these rednecks are out of ther minds wanting 2-3000 for a 350x. some with cracked plastic. Im thinking about ebay but that is really risky. I will look into the escrow thing and keep looking around here. it looks like the r is either more plentiful or people sell more of them becouse they are always up for sale. Also i dont think i will be able to have a 2 stroke becosue i will not have much room to open it up most of the time. Cept on weekends when i bring it some where. SO ill put the r off till later.

Man why do you X riders think R's are problem trikes? I've had my R for the last 10 years and never touched the engine. I'm 6'3" and run between 220-250 depending on how much Ice Cream my Girlfriend buys at the store. The 250R has more than enough torque to put around on trails. I have plenty of saddle time on my cousins 350X and can tell you the R is BETTER. BETTER suspension, MORE stable, LIGHTER, FASTER... Wait If everyone buys R's then parts will be harder to get.
OK Get a 350X

i've never had a 2 stroker trike, but i've had a dozen 2 stroker bikes. I've got a 350x now and I love it. It has broad power and is predictable in throttle responce, as a 2 stroker if flat and then hits power suddenly (powerband). once u get to know ur ride this can be good, and keeping it in high reeves is the only way to get power, which wears the piston, rings, and cylinder more. But regularly changing piston and rings is regular matinance. but don't frett, its really pretty easy to do. I had a rm125 susuki that was natorious for busting a piston. I got to carrying a set of rings and and a piston and changed it out while on the trails more than once.
Any trike u get is gonna be more than 16 years old. and is likely to need some work, i prefer the 350x, but as much as ive had to work on it, i wish it was a 2 stroker.

Turbo,
A 3 stroke is kinda like a Mermaid either your a believer or a nonbeliever, I am a skeptic but I want to be a believer, as long as I hold on to the possiblity that a mermaid could exist without ever seeing proof, I can also believe that 3 strokes exist I mean who wouldn't want all the torque of a 4 stroke and the hit of a 2 stroke!!! Now who wouldn't want to hold out hope that they do exist??

Jero lol u are crazy. With a 2 stroke do you have a timign chain and all that to take off or is it just a few bolts and the whole thing slides off?

no timing chan:doh: there are no valves, a 2 stroke has a crab and reed that allow fuel to enter through the cylinder and therefore replaces the valves!:bash: :loser:
Don't hesitate to ask questions around here, they'll usually be answered.
I'd buy an R, but then again I already have a 4stroke......:ugh:
Dan four strokes are as heavy as a truck and two strokes do suck sometimes, you ****en redneck...:D :demon:

usauly with riding what needs to be done with the bottom end? The r's seem cheaper and easy to find around here and parts can be had on ebay for cheap also im considering it too now

The only routine maintenance would be to change the oil, Just like you would do with a 4 stroke, The top ends usually come off after removing the carb pipe and 11 nuts or so, oh and drain the antifreeze on the water cooled versions. You can also occasionaly visually check the piston and sleeve for wear by taking the pipe off and shinning a flash light through the exhaust outlet.

With a guy my size should i be able to take a 400ex? I hate my town there arnt but 3 jobs 2 grocery stores and mc donalds a few others but i have no chance at them. But yet we have a police force the size los angeles we have tanks and count at least 5 cop cars on the way to the post office. Looks like i will have to travel 20 miles to get a job in the town over. I will try for walmart. Itll take me longer to save but hopefully ill have it by this winter :). My luck i will save all summer and get a 350x off ebay and have it shiped to my local air port or however that works and itll be something like a 185s with a 350x sticker on it.

If this is a Drag race your taking the 400ex to it all depends on how big the guy on the 400ex is, its all about the horsepower to weight ratio!!!
