Searched and Searched and seems that at one time there was a very good thread on this subject.

Edit: Is there any way to add to the top of the original post that the pictures are further down (page 2) now?????
We will take it from here.
Thanks AL

Thanks for making that available - it really helps!
The one thing I can't quite figure out is where the friction spring hooks on to. I've got the top figured out, that just hooks into the slot of the yellow ring. Best I can tell for the bottom of that spring is that it rest against a little cutout of the yellow ring.
When I put it all together (but not actually mounted on to the engine), it pulls really hard at first, and the decompression cable really scrunches down, and then seems to let loose. Is this "normal".
When I got the bike (1982 Honda 185S) the decompression cable was missing and so were several parts from the recoil starter assembly. So, I've never pulled one with a decompression cable hooked up before this.
Thanks for any advice you can give!

Your talking about the spring below the friction plate? It rests on a cut-out on the 'poll' and there is a bend in the plate that goes on the inside of the spring.

Check and make sure the decompression cable is seated correctly in the pull-start housing. Also check that the 3-coil spring inside the yellow part is hooked into its 'slots'. You can see where they sit in the housing as there are cut-outs for it. When pulling it off the bike, make sure to hold it down well so nothing 'pops out'. :)

No, I'm talking about the 3 coil spring. I can't tell what the bottom part of that spring hooks to. Is it under much tension when you install it? The only place I can see where to hook it to is the cutouts in the yellow piece and it's under no tension at all when it goes in.

Thats fine. If I remember right there was either no tension or very little tension putting it in. I think it was more of pulling it to make it fit around the metal than anything else. Then the yellow slipped right in.
