View Full Version : do YOU know??
does anyone have any idea what might be causing my '85 sx to jump out of 1st gear occasionally during engine braking? the kickstarter also seems to miss catching on a regular basis, making a screeching noise...almost as bad as fingernails on a chalkboard. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about the gears, but when you use the kickstarter are you just stomping it or do you push it down enough to catch before you put your weight on it?
Hey Dan -
Thanx for the reply...been on vaca for a week so i just read it. i let it catch b4 kicking. i've been reading up a little, thinking it might be something in the automatic clutch?? anybody else got any ideas?

as for it jumping out of gear, the detent could be worn and are you talking jumping out of first or sl?
yea, my bad... it's really "sl" that it's jumping out of. Old dirt bike habit, i always just call it 1st gear. The weird thing is that if you brake it a little, or thumb the throttle just a hair, it will go back into gear by itself. And yesterday i noticed that it does it mostly at low rpm's.

my dad's last 2 big reds had a problem with the shifter sticking either up or down and you'd have to move it back to center. probably not related to your problem, but all it took to fix his was some little bolt that broke.

yeah, my machine has had that problem i need a new magneto case for myn because of it. you can see where the shifter linkage smashed the bolt into the case and it cracked the case now it leaks oil:doh: i tryed to fix it with some stuff called belzona its like jb weld but better and it cracked again when i re torqued the bolts. so i have to find a half way decent cover.

My SX does this also. I've replaced the one-way sprag inside the centifrugal clutch with some luck but that fix didn't last very long. If I ever figure it out I'll let you know.
